J57ltr's 05' GTP wrecked again.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP base model

Well I went to Discount to say something more about their lack of attention to detail. So far:

Lost all 4 Pontiac emblemed valve stem caps. Said they would pay to replace them, but never was able to find a set. Not that big a deal.

Missed a bent rim, that had been balanced 2 different times (first time and got a nail in it the second)

missed having a 22mm lug nut on one wheel and didn't say anything.

The guy that sold me the tires said they were good tires, but when I came back to have one patched the guy working on the car said they were junk and wore out fast.

They sold me tires with 0 mile warranty, stated performance tires don't have a warranty. Asked to see PZeros and Potenza's and they both had factory warranties.

Had them check one of the other tires for a staple I had seen during rear brakes. They didn't find it. I saw it again when I was under the lift.

Was told that 225/55-17's were difficult to get so I decided to stick with the 50's plus I could only get 2 at that time.

So now the car has 10k miles since I bought the tires and had them rotated once and my fronts are down to the indicators. Talked to them today and wasn't to happy about it explained the whole thing and so tomorrow I go back and get a set of 225/55-17's. The car came with 50's and I could only get 2 at a time so I stuck with the 50's. So now I'm paying an extra $225 to get another set of tires.

So back to the alignment machine after this.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

So things have been a little dull on the car, I ended up getting the alignment checked again and it's all good nothing out more than .02*, car runs straight and feels good on the road my friend lost the original setup but it was 5* here and 2* there off. Haven't been doing a lot other than collecting parts for the exhaust and IC. So far I have:

For Exhaust:
Set of SD headers
45* O2 sensor bung
3"X6" Flex
Magnaflow 24"X7"X3" Diameter resonator

Still need:

Band clamps (2-3" and 2-2.5"?)
3" HD Cat.
3" SST J/45* tube
3" SST 5' tube
Muffler(s) like a 70 series 3 chamber Flowmaster or something similar and relatively quiet

For the IC I have:

2, 3/8" thick aluminum plates 12"X15"
1, Piece of Phenolic 12"X15"X2"
1 Single flow 2" thick core
1 inline water pump

Still need:

FMHE
Tubing fittings and misc.

I bought a AVT box (with 3 extra 0-5V inputs) and got DHP and the table modifier thingy. With Booba's hand holding I have flashed a first tune then drove it for a while and started logging again. The first flash was really really off for some reason I had KR for days just off idle and after a little while it started to act right. I flashed it a second time last night and it was much better still a little rich and I am still getting a lot of KR in places and it just falls flat. I changed the settings in the transmission for the guide I got and there are a lot of things that do not pertain to the 05' in the transmission file. Another thing is that you cannot just do a partial flash you have to do a complete write on the 05'. Another thing I am puzzled about is that when they talk about TP it always seems to reference older cars with an IAC which is just controlled through the TB on 04+ so the percentages are way off. So I typically idle at about 5% throttle and when starting the TP is at 18% until the car starts so that's kind of a mystery as to what I should do exactly. I am going to log again on the way home the trims seem to be getting better than they were. I'll change the fan turn on temps tonight as well. Although I am going to stray from the norm. In this weather my car cruises at about 186-188* with a 195* stat so I am going to set the low speed to turn on at 210 and high speed I will probably set to 217.

Other than that the car still needs a good bath I might wash it this weekend.

Jeff

Edit: Oh, I also got a set of poly bushings, I installed the Square ones but haven't put the other ones in. I notice no difference with them.

Got a set of 1.8/1.85:1 rockers too

04 up cars you need to pull the radio fuse iirc. or dhp acts a fool.

i set my fans to 180 temps hardly get past 195 with a 195 t stat. ca get to 200 in the heat of summer.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Good thing it wasn't HPT or else you just risked a bricked pcm

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Hmm, well I seem to remember reading that somewhere, but I didn't have any issues doing a full write, it worked just fine. I'll try that next time. Is there any benefit to doing a full write verses a partial?

I also don't want my fans running all the time even in the heat of Texas summer with the AC running I was running about 197, and since I am down about 188 when cruising. Even in evening stop and go traffic with the heater going I have enough airflow to keep the engine temp under 200. I am not setting my temps that low. Now when summer rolls around and if I have the same issue as last year where there wasn't enough airflow to keep the car cool even at 70 mph I might consider adjusting it. I think that problem may be solved since I was missing the foam bumper and the condenser/radiator covers. Running the fans all the time also shoots my IAT's through the roof.

Really? I thought that HPT was the bee's knees when it came to tuning? I was prepared for a bricked PCM I have an 04' that I have used previously and an 05' I purchased recently.

I do partial writes on my 04 and I never pull the radio fuse using dhp. Never bricked anything yet. May be an 05+ deal.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Not that I have an 04 but the person I've tuned panic'd when I used HPT. Said last time it bricked his pcm because the guy didn't pull the radio fuse. That's the reason he came to me in the first place
So from then on that's what I do

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Gotcha, I was reading in the tuning forum a while back about someone that had bricked about 7 PCM's or something and was asking if anyone knew how to unbrick them. (details are fuzzy, but that's the gist)

Yeah I know the tune for an 04' is totally different from an 05' so that's possible.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

So I am a little confused on the tuning situation. Everything I am reading is geared to return style boost referenced IAC having not so aggressive timing and not having the IAT attached to the MAF. I can't disconnect the MAF to do VE tuning, so I have been tuning the MAF. It's going OK I guess I had a little snafu today, not really tuning related, but had a vacuum line break and ran into my nemesis P0068 turned out that the vacuum line leading out of the LIM had snapped. Must have helped it when I changed coolant elbows a few weeks ago.

So anyway here's what I have been seeing. The first 2 times I flashed new binary files to the PCM after loading them into the table modifier and exporting it and all that. I drove about 50-60 miles and several starts and stops, in town and highway driving, and some high load driving. I then logged driving to or from work which features just about all you could ask for in load range and light cruise to start and stop and some aggressive driving as well.

The problem with the first two times on cold starts the engine would start up and settle into a high idle and then as it settled down it started to lope a little then it would settle into a low idle with no other problems. It drives fine after that, This has happened every time I have started the car cold. Today it didn't do that it started normally and went into a low idle as normal. Today was a little warmer it was in the 50's instead of the low, mid 30's from before so I was thinking that could be the reason it didn't do what it had before.

I am not sure whether this last tune fixed it or not since I haven't started logging until the engine is up to at least 160*

Thoughts?

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

theres a file that controls that. it has higher rpm for when its cold. kind a like a choke till the engine warms up.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Yeah I understand that it should do a high rich idle and then lower once the engine warms up, what I am saying is that once it starts to go into a low (warm, whatever the nomenclature is) idle it starts to lope. It hasn't done it the last two days. Are you saying I may need to change the warm idle file? I was scanning one time while waiting for it to warm up a bit, and watched the LTFT and the STFT go +20 when it happened then it started to come back down and settle down back closer to 0. That pretty much tells me it started pulling a lot of fuel out. Now the last two days the low was about 57 and today it's supposed to be 74 so I don't think it will do it again, until it gets colder.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

sounds like a vac leak. when my evap line split car had a 500 rpm surge, and sounded like it had a huge ass cam, lol it was stock.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar... Hey look a Squirrel

Yeah it had a huge vacuum leak yesterday when I went out to lunch, thought it was a bad maf as when I got it to run and it was loping I smacked the MAF and it started to run good then died. I had my wife bring me my spare MAF checked for power it was there and slapped it on and same thing, that's when I discovered the line had broken right at the manifold. It appears that an 05' will not run with no map sensor signal.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar...KR?

So now I keep noticing that if I let the car warm up for a while that when I take off I get all kinds of KR. This morning I started the car and left it to warm up while I went inside. When I left it started falling flat on it's face again.I had TApp connected and timing dropped to 0. This was doing less than 20 mph just leaving the neighborhood. I was at 17" of Hg and just barely moving if I downshift it a gear it will pick up and the timing will go back to normal. If I put my foot into it the timing will go to 0 but I can at least get going. It's the same issue I have been dealing with since about the beginning even before I changed the knock sensors. When we were doing the alignment I checked and double checked the dipstick tubes and made sure they were free and clear of hitting anything, the mounts are good and this doesn't happen all the time. I haven't played with any of the timing tables but it seemed to have dropped into the bad gas table. I noticed once I got onto the freeway that when I let off the gas that it dropped to 5* of timing where normally it goes to about 15* (it will sit in P or N hot idle at 5* and that's normal) then it just magically goes away and the car runs just fine. I do have one scan from DHP that shows this happening.
