J57ltr's 05' GTP wrecked again.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Made SST crossbraces for some reason

Yeah it kept dropping down to 1st and I set the WOT 3-2 shift to 255, but apparently it still downshifted. After looking at the logs it shows that the trans did downshift.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, A little Texas rainstorm and water in the car.

So as some of you may have heard the Houston area got a little bit of rain a couple of weeks ago. Well reports were that were supposed to get about 10" of rain through the the night. Since the detention pond was bone dry and that type of rainfall is fairly common no precautions were needed.... So we thought. Well we ended up getting about 22" from the report we got the next day (Monday) this all fell between about midnight and about 5:30 in the morning. I got a text from a neighbor about 5:45, about 15 minutes before I usually get up and said I needed to move my car. He also sent a picture:

Well this was a little bit of a surprise and by the time I got clothes on and came out this is what I saw:

So I got a few inches of water in the rear floorboards. When I opened the car door the the water was up to the sideskirts and so had to slowly close the door. I was trying to figure out where to put the car. Couldn't put it to the left side of the house as the main sewer line that runs from our house parallels the driveway and as wet as the ground was the weight of the car could crush it and well that would make for a below average week. I pulled the wife's car up to the garage and thought about pulling my car around the front and around our little tree and onto higher ground in the empty lot next to the house , but thought that may be too big of a risk as I had to drive through about 16" of water and the chances of me digging in and getting stuck were pretty high, and water I knew would rise another 10" or more over the next few hours. I moved my wife's car between the tree and the sidewalk and got in my car and by this time it was just about into the front doors. I slowly closed the door and started the car and it actually took a second before it blew the water out lf the mufflers and started burbling like a boat. I backed up and moved into the vacated area where my wife's car was. The right rear tire was still under water to the bottom of the rim. After several hours it was nearly to the center cap again. It pretty much held that level for the rest of the day and it had stopped raining.

Here are a couple of other views taken from down the street by another neighbor, this was about 7am or so. The bad thing is it was trash day so everyone's trash was at the curb. Well that resulted in everything everywhere. Household trash is pretty nasty since there are babies and..... Well use your imagination as to what could/would be in household garbage. I don't usually put out my trash until I come out to go to work so ours was secured but as you can see it's everywhere.

Someone even had a drone picture. I live on the back line and next to the empty lot (green space) the detention pond holds well over 3.25 million gallons of water, I haven't gotten an actual amount, but the way the neighborhood is designed it's supposed to fill up the Detention pond then back up into the streets. It's designed for a 100 year flood and this one was actually higher than when Hurricane Ike hit us, and this was just a rain storm. We were stuck until Friday so I had almost a week off and still got paid for the whole week. Man I have a great boss!

So on Tuesday I went ahead and stripped the seats, carpet and insulation. Then since I didn't have much else to do I went ahead and power washed the carpet and set it to dry. I had been wanting to do this since I got the car as there were some stains that looked like coffee or cola, so this gave (forced) me to go ahead and get it taken care of. So since I had to go to Guatemala for this week I didn't put the carpet back in so I've been running around with the drivers seat and shifter, you know because Racekar!

In other news this is how the positive terminal has been like this since I bought the car, but since it didn't give me any issues and I didn't really feel like it I didn't change the terminal. A few weeks ago it kept me from starting it and I ended up going ahead and putting a decent terminal I had on it since now that the carpet is out I'll put the wiring in for the stereo system soon.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Man, that weather could really rain on someone's parade. Full RaceKar!

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Now with Moar...KR?

Aw it takes more than one flush to make a GP go down. Seriously though... thats wet. Wow what a lot of rain! Sucks how it backed up so far so fast. Insurance nightmares galore, I'm sure.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Damn dude, that really blows. Good thing you didn't back the car in, or else probably couldn't even start it to move it somewhere else.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Nice going on making lemonade out of the lemons

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

What a pool party

Good thing the car isn't lowered

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Thanks guys, it really wasn't that bad as far as the car is concerned. Who knows if I'll need to replace the rear bearings soon since I'm actually not sure how long the water was that high some reports said the water really didn't get over the curb until about 5am. I was more concerned that the water might get into the house. That would have been lemons for sure. I have dealt with a lot of flooded cars in the past with a friend of mine and we would pull out all the interior, wash the inside, pressure wash all the seats carpet and insulation and put it in the sun to dry. Then go through all the connections and make sure that they are still dry clean the contacts and apply dielectric grease. Then do whatever else needed, oil and trans fluid, clean the trunk and check all of the bulbs and contacts and such.

Luckily i I didn't even get water in the trunk. The other thing is our flood insurance was only about $350 a year until after Ike but then it shot to $5,000 a year so we ended up dropping it. Had push come to shove we would have moved everything upstairs and started cutting drywall as the water came in. We replaced the carpet downstairs with laminate flooring so that would have sucked donkey balls, but that didn't happen so it wasn't bad. We had a bunch of cars in the street the smaller houses with the single garages they always park on the street so they had tons of people asking what I was doing and they were trying to hire me to do theirs. I don't have time but I did give them tips on what to do. Most of them just opened the doors. There was an 06 GP that they were trying to sell the lady wanted $1500 but owed 3k on it, it was white like mine but just an NA model. All and all its not a big deal and it'll get me where I need to be.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Oh so some new parts came in. I bought a 1" core radiator, it's a little small and measures .891" thick but it's thicker than my 5/8" radiator I have now so hopefully that will help. I also got a brand new Genuine GM SPO spoiler brand new painted white for $98.98 with all the hardware.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Love when insurance companies do that. $350/year...oh I guess we might have to pay something at some point...$5k/year now.

The spoiler makes a bigger difference than you'd expect, lol. Nice score! Glad to see the car was alright

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Little Texas rainstorm and water in the car

Haven't really done anything lately. I've been traveling lately and it's really really hot and it's just the first of summer. I did decide to change over to E85 for the hell of it and see how that works out. I didn't want to change injectors just yet. I do have a set of 60# injectors but I am fairly busy so I decided to just run the tank empty and fill it up with corn. This started the first issue. Finding E85 here isn't that difficult I thought as I see several stations on the way to and from work with a couple being very close to the house. I ran the tank very low and went to a station about a mile from home pulled up and they were out. Went to another station and they were out as well. Finally got to a station about 6 miles away and filled up (17.25 gallons) sat in the car while fueling and fired up the laptop, changed the Injector Skew to 128.5% and downloaded the file. When it was finished I fired the car up and it idled ok but I could tell it was a little lean. I used Torque Pro to watch the LTFT and STFT, the LT was pegged at 16.4% and the ST was staying on the positive side as well. I started to drive off and the phone announces a pending fault code P0171 System too lean bank 1. I drove home and parked the car.

Came out the next morning and drove the car to work and about a minute into getting on the freeway I get a confirmed P0171 and it sets the check engine light. My ST was about 6% most of the way there the O2 was swinging just fine and it seemed to be doing Ok. Drove home in the afternoon and decided to change the Skew to 34% since 28.5% seems to be a little low. Made that change and downloaded the file and went for a drive. Very odd as it doesn't seem to change anything Trims settle back to the same thing. I was a little puzzled by this as I thought changing the skew would work, I was told it would work. I thought that maybe this is one of the tables that is backwards and I needed to go the other way. I figured that if I set it back to 100% that it would either richen up or go really lean. I changed the file and downloaded it and fired the car up and was surprised that nothing seemed to be different at all. Nothing! it still idled like it was lean and a quick drive around like the last couple of times confirmed the same P0171 was still there. Trims settled the same and it wasn't any different from changing the skew to 128.5% or 134%, so basically the Skew doesn't work with on this car at all.

So now what? I have a tank full of corn and it's running lean as hell. Well I figure I now need to change the IFR and change the injector values so they will put out 34% more fuel than they are right now. So I went in and divided each point by 1.34.

Example: 208.97 is the first number in the chart and is at the -50 kPa value so this would be 208.97/1.34 = 155.95 so I go on through the chart and do this for every point. I also look back and make sure that they match and that they look proportional just in case I math wrong. I am sure that there is a much easier way to do them all at the same time but I like this method. That way since I am looking at every point I can see if something is not quite right.

I finish this download the file and start the car... It really doesn't like that at all. It still idles but is VERY lean but the PCM keeps control of it and I bring it up to about 1,200 rpm and let go of the pedal and it kind of surges a little as it settles back into an idle. If I had the hood up I am sure it would shake. It reminds me of doing a balance test on my old Thunderbird SC. I go back in and figured I must have done it backwards. As I am thinking about it I know I increased all the values and that should have added fuel. As I sit down I realize after looking again that it is not grams per millisecond it's milliseconds per gram and I did do everything backwards. So now I need to divide everything by 134%. So:

208.97/134%= 280.0198 And so on through the chart.

This time I started the car up and it idled very nice the fuel trims started moving around into the negative and positive and I no longer have the the P0171 code. I drove in to work this morning and no issues light is still off and the trims are even better than they were on gas. My car is bone stock right now so I am not really worried about running out of fuel. I don't plan on driving it hard anyway. I just wanted to see what the deal was with this undrinkable moonshine. One of the other things I plan on doing is setting my knock sensors back to the stock levels and see if that mystery KR comes back....

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

I ran into a similar issue using dhp to change the skew percent instead of change just the ifr. Finally had enough and just adjusted the ifr down 30% and now it runs like a dream.

Maybe an 04+ issue?

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

Also I run 60s on my car so I'll take a look at the file and send you a good e85 ifr for 60s for whenever you change over.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

Maybe, I know that Industrial Fish said that's how he changed just the skew and set it the IFR for 42# injectors. I haven't really looked at his numbers to verify his settings. I am wondering who else with an 04+ has had the same issues.

So did you change injector size then change that value by 30% to run E85? I guess when I switch to 60# injectors I will need to change it back then change for 60#ers then change it by the 30%.

Cool Thanks.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

Yeah that's exactly how I did it. First change it to 60s then down 30%. I'll screenshot the injector screen later and post it.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

Interesting.... I'm about to hop on that plan as well. My 60s have been in and waiting for some corn as well

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

Here are a couple of pics of how I have my 60# injectors setup for E85.

Re: J57ltr's 05' GTP, Korn Fed.

I've switched back and forth a few times. First time I ran E85 for like 3 months. Ran ok using the skew percent method (injectors at the right level for their size, adjusting skew percent up 30%). I switched back to gas for last winter, moved, then switched back.

Once I switched back this February it did what Jeff described above. Set a lean code, went +16 on my trims, and generally ran poorly. I decided to try to do it by the IFR method (set the ifr up for my 60# injectors then adjust 30% higher for the E85) and it has run better than ever since.

Better than it ever ran on E85 just adjusting the skew percent. Not sure if it's a GP 04+ thing as I have tuned a buddy for it who has a 97 and his ran good/great via the skew percent.
