Strut Options for making coilovers

I'm going to be making another set of coilovers soon. Seems the SHO Koni inserts are no longer available? Also seems the Bilsteins are going away as well. Still on Rockauto but for $250+ a pop. What gives? Am I stuck with GR2's or are there other options?

Also to add I'm not remotely interested in AGX's

Re: Strut Options

Are they yellow, have a stupidly large shaft and come with a boot?

I mean you all remember the new LT1 messiah right?

Re: Strut Options

Compg struts are a decent strut deff better the gr2 IMO...spose sway bar thing could be a issue

Re: Strut Options

Maybe all we need is the spec's on the diameter of the tube, length of travel and shaft length overall, find a similar strut (MonoTube) and just make a bracket to mount it to the knuckle...

Yes the Bilstiens are hard to come by and RA had just 2 a few weeks ago, restocked? Lol... I'll have to look. Only other option is JY...

Re: Strut Options

IMO its kind of pointless to use anything originally intended for a gp. They're just too long and you sacrifice all of the travel to get even kind of low. I had tried to do some research on other model cars that may work and I think that info is somewhere in my build thread, I might have to go dig that up. But koni also makes sort of generic style inserts and I thought that they might work pretty well, but I never tried them. I also kind of think there isnt much benefit of making coilovers vs modifying existing ones. You might be able to find some decent ones on craigslist to cut up. Its really only the top and bottom mounts that matter so much, the length of the strut can vary some depending on how low you want.

Re: Strut Options

I did this when my agx coilover blew out on my first conversions....I ordered the koni inserts and installed them. They blew out in a month of use at the same ride height my ride is on now. Clubgp has the writeup for it on the site. Under upgrades.

Honestly we really need a way to just machine the strud rod down. The rest is cake

Re: Strut Options

I agree, share the info. How else do you expect the community to advance?

Re: Strut Options

If I knew more I whole heartedly believe that some one just needs to measure the desired or targeted strut rod length, the amount of travel needed with out bottoming out and the actualy strut diameter is all that's needed.

Strut diameter doesn't really matter either as long as it fit inside a gutted stocker and use bushings like some of the other DIY guys have done.

Once the measurements are known just start calling companies one after another until the proper specs are found.

Seems pointless to just "Hope" a set of modded coilovers from a different vehicle will work. They would have to be modded anyways. Just need the strut, nothing else.
