• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Recent Recall

Thanks for the input on your case. Odd the running issue was a common thing, I guess that could have been the cooking spark plug wires. Your story matching that other one pretty much eliminates the fire being fuel related, especially given the area it was in. I'm surprised you didn't have the normal reaction and make that an incentive to try and prevent that from ever happening again. Especially after 2 years? But yeah get those valve cover gaskets done. Mind me asking the year and how many miles was on it the time it caught fire? I'm on Tapatalk and can't see signatures in case some of that's in yours.

2001 GTP - 100K at the time of my small fire.

When it happened i knew i had really old spark plug wires, so them being exposed made me think they must have arced and started the fire. Didn't really have a noticeable leak at the time so didn't think oil dripping down might start a fire. Car ran great as usual after getting new plugs/wires, and a new oil cap.

Any good tutorials here on changing the VC gaskets?

Not sure, the front one is straightforward, motor mount and a few other things have to move out of the way. Rear one is a bit more difficult. Elbows usually go along with the rear gasket.

Front:
1. Disconnect negative battery terminal
1a. Remove passenger side dog bone 15mm from rad support to engine bracket.
2. Unhook 7mm icm connector.
2a. Disconnect all plug wires at coil packs
3. Remove both belts
4. Remove 13/15mm nut holding ground to ICM stud (above and right of the water pump)
5. Remove ribbed idler pulley (15mm)
6. Remove SC tensioner (13mm nut in middle of tensioner pivot), and set assembly aside.
7. Loosen 15mm nut on front ICM stud
8. Remove 13mm/15mm nut holding ground wire to stud. Then 15mm to remove stud
9. Using E torx bit, loosen and remove the two studs from the head while supporting coil pack bracket.
10. Valve cover is now fully accessible. Change gasket/grommets and clean surfaces.
11. Reassemble.

Rear:
1. Remove alternator 13mm/15mm and SC to alt support bracket with Evap etc.
2. Loosen all bolts 13mm/15mmon the alternator bracket. (Key is you are going to wiggle this instead of draining coolant)
3. Remove map bracket and EGR shield 10mm
4. Wiggle alt bracket to clear the valve cover and do the gasket.

I think Bill posted that somewhere here, had it on a Word Doc so I could look at it on paper when I did mine. It's pretty straightforward, not too hard at all.

I just completely removed the alternator bracket and set it off to the side, took the elbows out, cleaned out the cavities, and when I had the gaskets done put it back together.

I also made the mistake of getting the Grommet Set with my Gasket Set for S/C, came with the Grommet Set already. If you're N/A then you need the Grommet Set.

Blue posted a list of parts on the first page of this thread.
