Recent Recall

Fixed and yes lol.

Okay, that's what I thought...

haha, too true - three friend's of mines parents have '06 Tortoises, one of them thought it was a late 90s car, had to convince him to look on the door to prove it was an '06, lololol

... they did the same thing to pointac they did to olds... in like 1999 they changed alllll the names on all the cars they sold so when grandpa went to the dealership to buy a new delta 88 they just had an aurora or an intrigue... wtf are those? so grandpas said **** it, I kknow what an impala is..... 2 years after they changed all the car names... they went under.... gm did the same thing to pointac... who the hell wants a g6 wheres my bonniville? they didn't know and gm didn't give them enough time for sales figures to recover before they pulled the plug. once enthusists figured out what the g8 was they went nuts over it... so much so that it was brought back by gm as the new "chevy ss"....

Funny how the same thing happened when Ford released the 500 to replace the Taurus, people were like, what the frick is a 500, but at least Ford learned and changed it back to the Taurus name so it would sell..., although why someone would have liked the 3rd or 4th gen Taurus so much they wanted the next gen is way beyond me, lol.

I was comfortable in the Taurus seats. Everything about those cars have rust issues though. Springs always break from rust, I'm addition of the whole body and the floorboards. Every other one has holes in the floor already. The subframes always rot right off of them. On the 99's and earlier, the body where the subframe mounts usually rusts apart. It will fall right out when you're driving.

I agree on the recalls with gm vs others. Maintenance and common sense avoids a lot of gm's "recalls".

the thing I find is funny is gm recalls are things like they key issue... don't be a retard with 80 keychains on your **** and youll be fine... or this valve cover issue... that routine maintenance as someone said.... or the dexcool issue which I don't blame gm exactly. but for had all those 6.0 problems that involved catastrophic failures, the 3.5 ecoboosts were popping head gaskets too. when the focus came out those *****es light on fire. my first gf had one brand new from the dealer blew caught on fire and burnt to the ground, pretty scary when your 16 and been driving for like 3 months lol. I recently pulled apart a 220k mile l67 block and that thing still had the factory honing marks in the cylinders.... what about the explorer roll overs? ford recalls = you die... gm recalls equals something stupid that no one would have thought about 20 years ago when they deisgned the stuff... vs the Taurus 3.0 motor which all blew up 10 years ago. or the Chryslers with Mitsubishi motors that blew up the day the warranty wore off... the fact that gm is even issuing a recall on motors that all probably have over 150k miles on them should say something positive in itself. theres probably more 3800's with 150k+ miles on them still around than cars with ford 3.8's in them period.... and gm has been trying to kill Pontiac since like 1979 when they stopped letting pointiac use their own tougher torqier v8's and using sbc's... my brother worked at a dealership in the early 2000's and GM was offering a 2500 dollar cash allowance for an impala, and no incentives for a grand prix or bonnivillie.... weird... cuz we all know they are the same basic cars... chevy just cares about the corvette and other chevy name plates.... only reason they picked buick over Pontiac was because buick is the number one selling car in china right now actually. not really happy with that, but that's basically it.... it was intentional... they did the same thing to pointac they did to olds... in like 1999 they changed alllll the names on all the cars they sold so when grandpa went to the dealership to buy a new delta 88 they just had an aurora or an intrigue... wtf are those? so grandpas said **** it, I kknow what an impala is.....
GM ignition switch issue = you might die :D I'm guessing the only reason they are doing this recall is because of the ignition switch scandal.

Wow, didn't know they rusted that much, my friend's parents' '98 and '06 both had minimal body rust at 240k, and now at 260k on the '06. Both of those cars lived their whole lives in the salt belt too, and when they owned them were never garaged. They just both had no power, the '98 had truly atrocious rear seating, the '06 is basically the same as the '98 minus interior and body look; engine went on the '98 at 240k (it was also fully rolled at around 180k and never fixed), tranny is going on the '06 now at 260k. Just boring lame cars... *shrugs*

I guess this is kinda off-topic of GM 3800 recalls, eh? lol

here some food for thought my dad back in 2000 bought a 1973 camaro that came from the midwest. it has rust only on front fenders and were the vin sits under the car was protected with undercoating and still has the original floor pans so your parents may have undercoating on the bottom.

I guess anythings possible...., I'll look under my friend's parents' Taurus next time I'm over there, I'm curious how rusty it is underneath now, lol.

My parents would never drive a Ford, haha. Dad grew up with Fords but his first vehicle was a 1979 Chevy 1/4 ton 350 Cheyenne that he bought new (still have it, needs a full restoration though), Mom grew up with Dodge and Chrysler.

Forgive me, I'm rambling...., I'm a rambler.

2002 mercury sable. 106k miles. Subframe is falling out of it. Very common

No clue on what they will do about cars that burned down in the past, you would have to prove that the recal is the reason for it I guess. Also, this problem is very preventable
step 1) Remove stupid plastic cover thingy. Grab and pull, throw away
step 2) Replace valve cover gaskets with FelPro ones.
step 3) Replace dry rotted fuel rail orings
no more roasty toasty GP
Fixed

didn't read anything here, but i'm going to put in my two cents on this.

have any of you ever tried to ignite oil? it's ****ing hard. why don't you start a fire everytime you change your oil and spill some on the manifold? pretty easy to see that the oil isn't the issue, even if it's leaking on the front header. i'm more leaning towards the real issue are rotted o-rings for the injectors which leak/spray fuel all over the damn engine bay. now, FUEL is easy to light and once that's going it'll catch a whole bunch of crap on fire.

so take that as you will. most people have never replaced those o-rings.
To add to this, how many other engine have leaky valve covers and do not start on fire? How many other cars have the 3800 engine and do not start on fire? I did a quick Google image search of other cars that have the 3800 Series II and looked at the front of the engine, they also have the plastic spark plug retainer but they don't start on fire.
Why is it just the w-bodies that start on fire? That is the real question everyone should be asking.

Might be like I said, they're the more common car with more occurrences happening. Of course they realize it's the same engine but disregarded that somehow

Have you seen how many Buick Park Aves, Le Sabres, Pontiac Bonnevilles, and even V6 4th Gen Fbodies there are on the road?

I know I see it every day, crazy some of the stuff I see. Anyway back on topic.

The 3800 is basically identical on all platforms its put in. Let's see, motor mounts, and that's all I can think is different.

The same thing pretty much happened to me two years ago. I was at a Popeye's drive through which was attached to a gas station. I felt the engine start to sputter. My gas light had been on for a few miles, so I thought I was running out of gas. I pulled up next to a gas pump...

Got out, was getting ready to pump some gas when I noticed a little bit of smoke coming from the hood. Opened it up and sure enough a small fire around the oil cap and plastic engine cover. I had half a Gatorade in my trunk which I was able to put out the fire with. The guy pumping gas next to me jumped in his car and took off lol.

Damage ended up being partially melted oil cap, melted engine cover around oil cap, and spark plug wires. Another minute or two and I bet it would have been a junker.

Never had any issues since other than an oil leak which is getting worse, and of course the ignition switch. Think I will be buying some VC gaskets based on this thread.

Thanks for the input on your case. Odd the running issue was a common thing, I guess that could have been the cooking spark plug wires. Your story matching that other one pretty much eliminates the fire being fuel related, especially given the area it was in. I'm surprised you didn't have the normal reaction and make that an incentive to try and prevent that from ever happening again. Especially after 2 years? But yeah get those valve cover gaskets done. Mind me asking the year and how many miles was on it the time it caught fire? I'm on Tapatalk and can't see signatures in case some of that's in yours.

When you do valve cover gaskets that would be a great time for some custom valve covers shoot me a pm or go look at my shop thread

Uggh, so I'm going to replace valve cover gasket and install the HV3 Insert. Now I'm thinking of possibly removing the LIM and porting...This forum is a bad influence. Can I clean the top of the LIM when it's still of the engine if I put rags in to prevent debris/brake clean from falling in?

After a 20 minute drive, I added oil and like a pinch dripped onto the headers where it instantly ignited.
