my homemade CAI, opinions??

Re: my homemade CAI, opinions?

well im a dipsh**, i already tore it out before waiting for any replies. are there any bad things that i should look for to happen now?

they're $18.32 at gmpartsdirect.com

rockauto sells them too

hey guys sorry bringing the thread back from the dead but I'm going to be making a CAI similar to the one I just looked in this thread. How did you guys mount the pcm once you took the air box out?

Just let it sit there, its not going to hurt anything. If your worried about it, strap it down or you can buy a pcm tray

just get a piece of foam, rubber matting, or rubber feet.......get it between the pcm and the metal, and then strap it down..........that is what I did and I have had no issues with it.

Thanks for the idea with the foam or rubber. I was thinking of some kind of cushy material that will stand up to the elements :)

absolutely nothing anymore, mine just sat there, where my new one will continue to just sit

damn, both of those pictures i have up in here are some pretty embarrassing looking intakes, it looks nothing like that anymore....

When I did my CAI I bought a after market MAF from jet that didn't have a screen. My OEM does. I say if it has a screen leave it because the sensor points are limited to how much air it will calibrate anyway. The one I bought from Jet the sensor wires inside the sensor look different from the OEM one. The benefits hard to really tell. But I have noticed my idle is dead on always, very little flucuation. my car purrs like a kitten at 750 RPM at idle and roars like a lion at WOT. Also with these CAI, FWI whatever, clean your TB once a year real good, maybe more depending on your driving environment.

Just a thought here, my car came with a block heater and the cable is zip tied to the drivers support brace and due to vibration, the paint has eroded off and begun to rust.

Zip ties can be your enemy if not positioned correctly.

Lol, that has nothing to do with whether it should have a screen or not. All MAFs should have a screen to steady the air as they cross it. That way the PCM knows the sample that the MAF receives is consistent to the entire cross section of air. And idle would not be the time that it would matter, since the air is moving relatively slow and the engine is in closed loop mode. During WOT is when it would matter since the air is moving faster and your engine is in open loop mode (ignoring feedback from the O2 sensor). All it would take without the screen is the air to be swirling a particular way to match the resonance of the intake and your engine will go lean and you pop a piston.

That would make for a great week, I'm sure. :th_winking:

I just shoved my PCM under the intake and its been fine ever since. Doesn't move around at all, it's actually pretty secure.

my thoughts exactly. if you dont use your grand prix for some seriously bumpy offroading, then it will be fine
