Just got car now knocking

id remove the stud, use one of the bolts there, put the stud in a area its not in the way of the pipes. you also have that one stud with a nut on the end, thats for the oil dip stick to be bolted down to it. if your some how using that one in the wrong spot.

i used no sealant on my exhaust bolts, none have backed out.

maybe cut it shorter then. id rather use studs any day of the week over bolts.

if you put the nut on, then cut it, and screw the stud in the hole with the nut threaded on, this way theres no fighting the cut threads to get the nut on.

Ok I guess that's the best way to go. How would I get the studs back out if I cut the tip off since there is a hex hole in it?

i can only assume its bottomed out, so mark it before you take it out, this way you know its as far back in when you finger install it now.

im sure you could oil the threads to help them go in easier. no way studs are backing out on you ever for any reason.

Ok thanks. I will update after I'm done cutting them. Hate to do it since they are new, bit oh well. It's my first time using studs. Live and learn

oh, and the old double nut trick comes to mind also, two nuts on the stud, make them tight on each other, you now have a nut to turn the stud in with, un lock them tighten the bottom one, and remove the extra one.

I tried to do that with the exhaust studs. I did that trick years ago on my Mustang, but forgot how it went.

It might work. I would probably cut the stud instead if you can without heating it up too much.

How much is sticking up? I don't understand why the stud didn't go all the way down. I would take the studs out and clean the threads in the hole and try to get it down all the way. Where did you buy the head studs from?

I'm just going to cut them. Would I ruin the headgasket of I took the stud out? Can the stud even come out of the head since the head is torqued already?

damn i feel silly, i thought you were talking exhaust studs, but its the head studs hitting the exhaust flange right?

your ok just taking one bolt out and re torquing it. maybe that studs not bottomed out due to some crap int he holes. did you clean the threads with a thread cleaner?

i used a stock old head bolt, cut 2 groves down the threads on opposite sides with a 1/8 inch grinder disk and then you thread it in and remove it. lots of crap came out of every hole.

Yes I did the same thing you did. I was scared of it going too far in the hole spinning by hand since I didn't see an example anywhere until it was posted here. But yes the bolt holes were cleaned.

It's been awhile but I remember having to put a hex socket on a medium extension to screw it all the way down. And if I remember right you wouldn't see any of the threads from the bottom of the stud, but again it's been awhile.

The studs should be the same length as the bolts, with the head of bolt, right? So I wouldnt worry about going too far. If you can find some of those long q-tips or tape a few together and dip it in a little oil and stick it all the way in the hole to get any crud at the bottom of the hole.

Ok I'm about to go back out here and mess around with it. Just to confirm if the headgasket won't get messed up if I just undo the bottom studs and put more thread sealant on it and torque it back to 75? Has anyone done this before?

I forgot how the manifold bolts go. Wasn't there a bracket with bolts connected to the coolant system?
