Cops who tailgate you...

I live in Virginia. When I lived in the Colonial Heights city area a cop got behind me and turned on his lights, but no siren. I was crossing over a bridge that entered into Prince George County. I was waiting to get off the bridge to pull over, but as soon as I reached the other side he turned off his lights and pulled over into the median to turn back into Colonial Heights. He was definitely trying to pull me by the way, he followed me across the entire bridge, which takes about ten seconds to cross. I have no idea about the laws concerning this, but thought I might add my experience to the thread.

I love when ppl who know nothing about law enforcement, speak on how we should do our jobs.

Sent using my bionic thumbs from my sweet DROID Razr Maxx

Shouldn't you be cat napping behind the local doughnut shop?

The cops i know admit to doing this, some think its funny to watch people squirm and some do it wait for a mistake for a reason to pull you over.

Best thing to do is pretend he/she is not there and drive normal, get stopped call and complain or file a formal complaint.

Its funny to hear a cop come up with reasons why they do it, when in reality they have no real reason to tailgate.

We, as society, grant cops a certain amount of authority to make those calls, because we acknowledge that their job is difficult and dangerous

I watched American History X last night, thought this was somewhat relevant lol

While I do agree with this, wholeheartedly. I think they should stand accountable for their actions when they abuse their powers of authority.

i couldn't agree more, there are many that stand by the book, and other who abuse their power, just part of their personality i guess

They need to follow to get ur plates but they dont need to keep doin it.

And im suprised nobody has brought up the idea of the hid reverse light mod for tailgaters! :th_laugh-lol3:

I'm going to put 9005 bulbs in my cargo light in my pickup just for this, or some long range driving lights under the bumper

just love it when they tail gate you so you speed up to get around the guy next to you and they pull you over.....oh well lol

i got pulled over on Easter for my tint, cop did the whole tailgate thing, so i gave him a does of the F body brakes when pulling onto the shoulder.

funny as it seems, 9 times out of 10, if i pass a cop on the side of the road and he pulls out after i pass him, im getting pulled over. i feel it in my gut, then the hes on my ass and the lights a flashing all over the place.

Woman: Is there a problem, Officer?

Officer: Ma'am, slammed on your brakes while I was following you at a safe distance.

Woman: Oh, I see.

Officer: Can I see your license please?

Woman: I'd give it to you but I don't have one.

Officer: Don't have one?

Woman: Lost it 4 times for drunk driving.

Officer: I see... Can I see your vehicle registration papers please.

Woman: I can't do that.

Officer: Why not?

Woman: I stole this car.

Officer: Stole it?

Woman: Yes, and I killed and hacked up the owner.

Officer: You what?

Woman: His body parts are in plastic bags in the trunk if you want to see.

The Officer looks at the woman, slowly backs away to his car, and calls for back up. Within minutes, 5 police cars circle the car. A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

Officer 2: Ma'am, could you step out of your vehicle please!

The woman steps out of her vehicle.

Woman: Is there a problem sir?

Officer 2: One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner.

Woman: Murdered the owner?

Officer 2: Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car, please.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Officer 2: Is this your car, ma'am?

Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers.

The first officer is stunned.

Officer 2: One of my officers claims that you do not have a driving license.

The woman digs into her handbag and pulls out a clutch purse and hands it to the officer. The officer snaps opens the clutch purse and examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.

Officer 2: Thank you ma'am, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, that you stole this car, and that you murdered and hacked up the owner.

Woman: Oh my God!! And I bet the lying bastard also told you I slammed on my brakes too!!!

Old joke is old... but it still makes me LOL everytime I read it bahahaha

I would try that sometime, but I would probably get shot instead.

I have actually slammed on the brakes in front of the cop when he got closer than I liked, he pulled me over. When he started harassing me about my slamming on the brakes, I told him a dog ran into the road, he stated that he saw no such dog, my reply was "Of course you didn't, you were too close to me to see anything!"

He snuffed and gave me back my license and insurance, never even ran them. My buddy was with me and also letting into him about being too close for no reason. So 2 vs 1 cop and his video of him tailgating was a no win situation.

When I was 16 or 17 I drove home from a high school football game with my GF in my mom's Sebring, no tint, metallic lima bean green, granny car.

This County Mountie that sat outside the school gate starts following me, I'm like, OK, trying to see if I'm one drunk or whatever, I'm cool with it.
Then he moves into the left lane (4-lane divided) at about my 7 o'clock, and turns his damn high beams on and points that spot light into the car. I'm completely blinded, cant see a damn thing. So I try slowing down to 20 (in a 60) and no matter what speed I go, this asshat is right there. By now I'm a little pissed, and frankly in danger. So I pull off to the right hand side of the road and the cop pulls in behind me and flips his lights on. Then the dude comes up and has the audacity to ask if there's a problem. hahahaha

I told him (I'm working off a 5 year old memory here, words may not be exact) "You f**kin think?! Idk what the hell you're doing but I can't see where I'm driving. If you wanna see in the car, here you go, look all you want. Either way, everyone I'm gonna blindly run into tonight will thank you for using your lights properly." Cop says something insignificant and leaves. (And I go home and have some alone time with the GF)

IDC what your reasoning is behind it, that's stupid.

Do you tailgate people?

Following someone for miles on end at a time? No. Making sure someone isn't hiding drugs, guns or drunk, yes. I read another post that once someone crosses into another jurisdiction the cop "can't do anything." Well, I'm here to tell you that's wrong. If I see a vehicle make a wrong turn, not use a signal, blow a stop sign or whatever the case may be, I can follow them to Seattle if I wanted to. All because the act of probable cause first occured in my jurisdiction. Yes, there are a lot of douchebag cops out there that give us all bad names. It ruins it for the rest of us. In my 6 years as being a cop, I have wrote only 12 tickets. All were for more than 15mph over. I am now with the drug and gang task force so, I don't see much traffic time...

one of my high school friends is now doing the same thing in richmond, va. some of his stories are pretty crazy to say the least.

also, I agree with the jurisdicition deal. It doesnt go off where you are pulled over at, just where the offence happened.

yes, there are some d-bag cops, but for the most part, they dont single anyone out. if you feel singled out, then you are clearly doing something wrong

if you ever want to just write tickets come to NJ and join the Bergen county police. i got 12 tickets in one shot one day, not kidding.

all these guys do is stop commercial trucks and write equipment violations, they have a 5 ticket minimum per stop. not kidding at all.
