Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

also condiser taking a look at the #9 pulley. the bottom bolt that holds it in goes into a coolant passage. that could be leaking too

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Dont know if this helps but the same issue happenend to my car but it was the 97 altenator bracket that was the problem switched to a 99+ with aluminium elbows and never had a issue since

How could the Alternator bracket leak coolant? Wouldn't it just be the Coolant Elbow?

Im probably wrong but your motor mount isn't leaking is it? I know they have fluid unless you got solid mounts, because that looks to be where it mounts to or near.

I believe it's still a hydraulic mount, could be leaking but this is for sure coolant leaking out. It's orange (I still use Dex-Cool) and my radiator is much lower everytime I drive it. Plus, the car gets REAL hot when driving.

When my lower elbow went, coolant ended up in that motor mount area.

This could be it. It's either the Water Pump or Rear Coolant Elbow. Nothing else because I don't know where Coolant would be coming from.

Upper coolant elbow is fine, radiator hoses are fine, radiator looks fine, heater hoses look good and dry. That just leaves the Water Pump or Rear Elbow, right?

Pulley #9? Which one is that?

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

I'm still thinking its the Rear Elbow or Water Pump.

When driving the car (I have a bottle of coolant in the back seat), the car heats up to about 215 - 225* before (What it seems like) the thermostat opens. Then the temperature drops to about 185* then repeats. Kinda weird... Maybe the Water Pumps fins are decayed? I don't know.

Contemplating just dropping the car off at a shop, telling them the issue, let them diagnose what's wrong, then bringing the car home and fix it myself.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Oh i didn't realize you were still talking about the leaking coolant, i thought that was something new. My bad.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Yes im referring to the elbow it was a bad leak me replacing it to a 99+ alt bracket w/2 elbows was a must.. It dripped on the motor mounts the same way i see in your pictures

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Timing covers can leak too. Doesn't happen often but I've seen it. I'd say pressure test it, at 16 psi it should leak real good and you should find it.
The temp should stay okay until at least 10 minutes after the thermostat has been opened if the cooling system is just low.

Don't '97s have a rear coolant elbow that goes into the head, or something like that?

I know it's different than the other years. Didn't know you could change the placement of the rear coolant elbow.

Happen to have a '99+ Alternator Bracket laying around? lol

I pray it's not the timing cover...

I hope it.............magically stops leaking

Exactly it does but mines just started leaking badly... Idk why and it caused problems high coolant temperatures its Better now and no not not none laying around now lol

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Timing covers are pretty easy on these engines, like everything else. Alt bracket has to come off, and I think you can leave the water pump on it. Harmonic balancer has to come off obviously.

I've diagnosed a lower elbow leakwithout disassembling anything before. I stuck my finger around where I knew the lower elbow was (since you cannot see it) and my finger was wet with coolant. Easy.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

Yup TC is pretty easy to change hardest part is generally getting crankbolt to break lose which can either be done with a good impact or a pair of good ol vice grips on the flexolate then a breaker bar.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

I have a spare 99+ bracket laying around. I'd swap the water pump and elbow and rtv the bottom elbow where it goes into the timing cover.

This is what I plan on doing. I doubt it's the Timing Cover.

I'll take that 99+ Alternator Bracket if you want to sell it. The sooner you can ship, the better, so I can get to working on this car.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

You'll have to swap your alternator.

This.

the 97's are different and the alt bracket uses 2 elbows i would get 2 aluminium ones.. They can be had pretty cheap at autozone

My car now had aluminum coolant elbows. Well, one actually.

The rear one, is still plastic I think.

And... I don't really feel like buying a new alternator.

You only have one right now 97 have the one that just goes from the bracket to the lim

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

There isn't a second Coolant Elbow in a 97? It's been so long since I swapped mine over to Aluminum. Lol

If that's the case, wouldn't it be my water pump that is leaking? The one coolant elbow I have no is dry, Heater hoses are dry, radiator and radiator hoses are dry.

All that's left is the Water Pump and possibly the Timing Cover.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Now Has A Coolant Leak.

The 97s have the lower elbow cast into the alt bracket housing. The oring there can go bad. And no it goes into the timing cover not the head. Also I have a 99+ alt tensioner for sale.
