Lost a belt - GP may be dead

Success. I think. I ordered the dorman water pump bolt kit from amazon. It does not cross reference with our cars but when digging deeper, parts of it did. So $13 later they arrived and they were an exact match. In my 5 water pump removal and reinsertions I broke a couple and the long ones were coated with sealant. Anyway, put on pump, used uview to fill, now pressure testing. If this works then rack is going back in. Thanks all.

Ok. Lost maybe 1/4 lb pressure in over an hour.

Put rack in. I can not get the roll pin in the subframe. It's too long. Should I bend the opening a little? Asking first and going to wait because I always do first and ask later and create problems.

what roll pin in the sub frame?

or do you mean the shaft back on the rack nub. i got help for ya on that one if thats it.

Not sure if we are speaking the same language. There are two attachment holes for the rack onto the subframe. The one under where the lines go in slides right in. The one on the passenger side came with a split bushing and a roll pin that goes in the middle. When I put the pin through the bushing it will not fit into the bracket ok the subframe.

Does that make sense?

oh, rack fitment into its mounts, you need to give a wiggle and pull it down, make sure the bushings not hung up on the top of the mount. if you can get it in there and close a screw driver in the hole can center it for ya.

you leave the bushing and "sleeve" inside it on the rack.

can I slip in on this thread ? is there an adjustment for play on the rack? I have play in my steering the front end components are all tight

o rings are still there. There was a new one in the box with the new rack, but must not have brought them from auto zone. Do I need to get new o rings? They look good.

Anyway - update for costs

Returned the impact gun from Home Depot
- $106

New Rack $199
New clamp for coolant host $2
1gallon distilled water $1
1 gallon coolant $11
Bolts for water pump $13

So sar far
Tools now $27

Parts
$438

I also started working on the rust underneath. Scrape with wire brush, soak in some acid form autozone, paint with some chemical, and then pain with rustoleum. Cooling system held pressure for 3 hours with loss of maybe 1/2lb of pressure after the first 30 minutes and then none after.

The CV axel from autozone seems to be different from the one from GM but has the right cross reference number so we will see.

Tomorrow more reassembly. And maybe a shower.

Thanks for the help. I just like your confirm before I do something stupid.

CV is in. Sway bar in. Harmonic balancer on. Is there a trick to that like for the removal it just really tight?

Now just figuring where all the hoses/wires go.

there is a tq setting, should be in the bolt tq thread, iirc its a sticky.

but most just zap it with a air gun or make it as tight as you can.

OK - done for the day. So for less than $500 and a few days work I will have a new water pump, power steering pump, power steering rack, sway bar, and front brakes. All parts guaranteed for life. Since I have had the car (I got it in 2007 with 7,000 miles) it has always had a coolant smell and slow leak and also always had a power steering leak/problem. They all have to be fixed now. I hope

I did have to spend a few bucks for a new spade for the electrical connector for the knock sensor. The one from auto zone was close enough, just had to file it down a little to fit. Also bought some new plastic cover rope for the electrical connectors. The delaer wanted $41 for a new electrical connector!

What I have learned -

1 - Even with just DIY experience, I do it better than the shop - even though I really like the shop, I just care more about the little things like hose routing
2 - every job I do from now on starts with dropping the sub frame - it just makes life easier
3 - I owe some people here a drink, if ever in Akron Ohio look me up

Congrats! And with you daughters help, she will appreciate the car more than " it broke and Dad paid to fix it". She might even hear or notice things about cars that typical young'uns these days wouldn't.
