Camo guy's thread about cams

Re: Installing new cam

Look into a lower conversion gasket set. Better bang for the buck than an oil pan gasket plus a timing cover gasket plus a water pump gasket..
Depending on which maf you go for determines what you need for an adapter or pigtail then wire it directly. Same with the N* TPS.

I don't see
valve springs
Valve seals
Valve cover grommets (a must when doing gaskets)
Teflon paste for timing cover bolts and LIM bolts

FWIW headers are no easier when the motor is out. Because most of us put the rear piece on the trans, install motor, then bolt it all up. It's not much different than doing it in the car w/o having pulled motor.
Valve springs are there, I put lifters instead of springs beside the cam, idk way. And could you explain valve seals/cover grommets? Is that not the same as the valve cover gasket?

Re: Installing new cam

valve seals go on the valves when doing springs. Grommets come with some valve cover gaskets.

Re: Installing new cam

The fel pro seals are the same as zzp's vitons, cheaper and they always count the proper number. In the 5 times I ordered them from zzp, I never once got the same number. LOL Anything past 4 you gotta question their math.

On the seals, they are cheap and it's worthwhile to know you won't leak oil into the heads when you are there. It's also quick and easy to replace them while the spring is off.

On the gasket/grommet. The valve cover gasket lays in a groove and ends up postiioned over the head on the edge to seal. The bolts that hold the valve cover down have a sleeve on them to stop them from crushing the valve cover. The grommet sits in the hole and is pushed down by the sleeve..w/o a good grommet, you have no pressure holding your valve cover down and you don't always seal well. Prevent a leak, do the job right!

Buying VC gaskets from zzp is a double jeopardy mistake. First off, their gaskets don't fit stock valve covers properly. They fit zzp's metal covers, not stock covers. Then, you think you are getting a deal because they are cheap, well that's due to no grommets and they feel like cheap material as well.

Re: Installing new cam

My ZZP VC gaskets leaked within a year on stock covers!

Lol... They forced me to buy those nice shiny polished Aluminum covers so the new gaskets would work right!

could you then refer to me the proper parts on rock auto's website? So far I just have valve cover grommet, I planned to get the valve springs and valve spring retainers from zzp too unless you guys suggest otherwise.

Re: Installing new cam

Dude might be on crack.. one freeze plug in a billion 3800's leak.

Camo.. look up the thread by me "common parts" all the part numbers are listed there. Use those to pull them up on RA if that's your preferred vendor. I've posted tons of stuff to help people, aim them in the right direction etc. I don't hold other guys hands unless they are a good friend and dying though. Sorry man.. you need to click on them up yourself.
