Camo guy's thread about cams

Re: Installing new cam

Yeah I want to do this myself but I would also like some help with it too. When I supercharged my cobalt a few years ago it was at a guys garage and there were a bunch of people to help out so I did also get to see everything and learn. And I did want to do some work on the trans too.

Re: Installing new cam

working on the tranny takes some real know how, or the balls to get in there and do it. unless your talking a simple shift kit. that a noob can do with ease.

its all just nuts and bolts, nothing to get to be scared of, take pics, bag and tag your bolts. you can pull a engine with a 30 piece 3/8 th socket set. and a some wrenches. then take it apart with the same tools. so 40 to $50 in tools you get to keep forever?

only special tool you need is a fuel line disconnect, they cost 5 to 10 bucks. and a long or a bunch of extensions to get the backwards bolt off the tranny bell housing.

Re: Installing new cam

I have sockets and wrenches and a fuel line disconnector. I don't have an engine hoist though. And for the trans I got a rebuild kit, new filter, do a fluid flush, torque converter, and new 4th gear.

Re: Installing new cam

your gonna want help if your going in to do new clutches and such, there are special tools needed for that. dropping it off at a shop to be rebuilt is always cheaper then the shop pulling it out and putting it back in.

you got most of what you need, rent the hoist. buy a stand, harbor freight sells them for 50 to 60 bucks. hell they sell the hoist for 125 when on sale.

or try craigslist for a used cheap stand and hoist. most hoists come apart, and or fold up to lean on the wall out of the way when not in use.

Re: Installing new cam

most of what your doing would be easier with the motor out, but it can all be done left in, its up to you. the pan will suck to do if its in the car.

having the engine on a stand would make everything easier in the long run, as you can now work on it sitting in a chair if you wanted too, and flip the engine over as well. also you have a clear view of every last bolt with it out. then you could clean it up real nice and paint it if you wanted to. then you can do the rear seal and the rear cover gaskets also.

taking the exhaust manifolds off out of the car would be a treat too, as your doing headers i assume. a few guys have bolted the headers on, then dropped the engine back in.

totally up to you, bent over working, or in a garage on a stand. with free range around the engine.

Wanna come in from Jersey to help me then lol, but yeah I think I will pull the motor out especially cause i gotta do the oil pan which I was looking at tonight. Plus I can scrub the whole engine down like you said which is needed with all that oil. Replace the water pump too, just yeah it sounds like a better option. Plus I can take the trans out with it too to have that rebuilt.
