Wife broke the car :(

Well currently I'm in Iraq. I get a talk to the wife and get some bad news. Is it about her leaving me? No, it's worse, the engine "blew up" on our 98 Grand Prix GTP Daytona.

So the mechanic she took it to says the engine is locked up with the alternator apparently causing most of the damage.

My question would be, assuming the engine is blown to bits, how much should I ask to sell the car? (really my only option)

The body is in good condition, the interior is in good/fair condition. The scrap yard will only take $200 for it, but I don't think I can stomach scrapping that car, though I don't think I have much choice.

its a pace car. part it out. the wheels, spoiler and rails will get you close to 1000 on their own. plus i doubt the entire engine is scrap....there's probably quite a few usable parts you could sell. someone might even want it as a roller....

man, i'd almost take it...to far from me... u don't want to do another engine? how long till u get back ??

If you can, post some pics... Im in Durant, family in tulsa... looking for wheels but spare parts to tinker with wouldnt be all bad

yay imcome tax season, sorry for the bad luck

why not just get a new motor and fix yours back up???

I'm sorry but how can an Alternator blow a motor? From what it sounds like the mechanic may bot know what he is talking about and is trying to create a sob tory to your wife it will need this and that and rack up the bill. I wish I were closer to the car for ya.

drop a stock motor back in her for 650.00..... Ed Morad parts co... he is cheap. or I can grab my buddies trailor and pick up the car from ya.

I thought the same thing. Doesn't make sense....

let me get this straight..
u think your engine blowing up is WORSE than your wife leavin u? :th_wtf:
but part it out or get a new engine

umm I thought the alternator only dealt with giving power while the car is on and charging the battery... I don't think it could actually do anything to the engine... let alone make it disabled.. I would definitely hold on to the car until somebody that knows what they are talking about looks at it.

In the presence of the awesomeness that is a Supercharged 3800 motor, the little Alternator felt compelled to do more to boost the cars performance. So it over ran itself creating so much electricity it exploded the spark plugs sending little shards of metal into all 6 cylinders at the same time causing all 6 pistons to crack at the same time, resulting in the destruction of the motor. fail little Alternator, :th_shakinghead1: fail

:th_biggrin2:

I PM'ed a couple of guys back that have hit me up already. As of now I'll see what I can do as far as pictures. Without me being there I'll have to wait till the wife can get some pictures of it and get them posted.

I knew the alternator story was crap, but she hears what she wants to hear. She swore up and down that it was my fault because I messed with the supercharger (I changed the coupler on it). As of now the mechanic reports that the engine is just locked up, not blown. Currently it's still in the shop with the mechanic trying to figure out what caused it. The supercharger is intact though he says...

Between the mechanic blowing smoke up her ass and her not understanding cars, I'm sure I'll never get a straight story until I get back from the Sandbox (should be June sometime).

I suppose I can at least post some issues about the car in case anyone decides to purchase it with the hopes of getting it going:

- The transmission shifts rough with slow acceleration. Hits harder from 3rd to 4th gear though. It's more pronounced if it's not in 'PERF SHIFT'. The transmission fluid was right where it needed to be, but I didn't get a chance to get it flushed.

- Over the last year or so, I can count 4 occasions where I've accelerated from a standstill (normal acceleration) and the car will just cut off. The radio or any electronics for that matter will never even so much as flicker off though. Kind of like if you were just driving along and turned the car off while moving. Sounds to me like an ignition issue, but I'm no mechanic.

As of now those are the only issues that stick out, I'm sure the wife could find more though...

Anyway I'll try to keep you all posted the best I can.

Sounds to me lik your CKPS is going.... causing it to stall out..

or your loosing fuel pressure....

In my lifetime I have only seen 1 3800 lockup(from lack of oil). cash for clunkers...and it took a LONG time.

I'd be looking at a starter if the motor wont turnover. I'd also get out a breaker bar and socket and rotate the motor by hand. best of all I'd get a 2nd opinion from another mechanic!!!!!
