What motor oil do you use and why?

So, even if engines don't need break in (which I don't have any information to support other than being called a newb haha) isn't there a lot of crap in a new engine that would make an oil change within the first 1000 miles a good idea? Thats how motorcycles are to my understanding. Plus I know rings need to seat but aren't there a lot of other parts that mate during some initial period?

Also, given some peoples knowledge about cars I can't really blame them for following an oil monitoring system in their car. If its not idiot proof it shouldn't be in a car.

If I had actually followed my monitoring system I would have probably ended up at 7-8k miles. Lots of cold start in MN may play into thar :/

Even though that GMC runs the new Dexos full syn oil from the factory, they still mate it to a crap tastic oil filter.

I find it even funnier that the oil life monitor kept the owner from changing their oil.

I found it extremely funny, but as said the sensors are not completely accurate, they go based on how the vehicle is driven and how many miles its gone since reset.

But yes Matt is right, Dexos is only a Synthetic Blend.

Mobil 5000 is what GM uses as its basic conventional oil ($3-$4)

Dexos Synthetic Blend (Mobil Syn Blend) for 2011+ cars ($5-$6)

Mobil1 Full Synthetic for cars with Racekar status or really good owners. ($7+)

figured prices on average for my area, I use Mob1 regardless, change it regularly, always checking it because some burns off and I'm paranoid about putting another motor in the car before I'm ready to, no problems...even with a ACDelco filter. :th_peaceout:

I used to use mobil 1 synthetic all the time in my grand prix. I have since gone to using oil that goes on sale. If mobil 1 goes on sale then I'll get it. But I am currently using peak synthetic and it works just as good. Don't rule out store oils such as oreilly's or napa synthetic as they get good reviews and can be had for a good price.

How come you guys always say you get "whats on sale" when all oils at Walmart are always at the auto parts store's sale price?

Up here Canadian tire has oil on sale almost every week. I've tried a few different synthetic oils from there and I always gotta keep topping it up every couple weeks except for when I use Mobil 1. Has anyone used Kendall oil?

I used castrol for a long time, tried Amsoil for a bit... I had a problem with the oil disappearing. I know it wasnt going on the ground because at work/home I park in the same place all the time and never saw any spots, undersides are clean. So I know it's burning off.

I recently decided to try out Mobil 1 0w30 full syn, first oil I ever used that did not burn off... or atleast waaaaaaaaaay less than the others, I barely lost any, Im thrilled.

Filter... I used K&N pretty solidly for awhile but my oil always got dirty fast, I switched to Bosch Distance Plus and it stays nice much longer now.
You do realize that the oil got dirty because it was doing its job right? Gases also seep through the piston rings amongst other things to cause it to change color faster.

Because Wal mart doesn't do the package deals like Advance does. I usually get 5 qts of oil and a filter for under $20 where you are going to pay more than that to get the same stuff at Wal Mart.

Another factor, I avoid WalMart at all costs. There are only 3 things I buy at WalMart regularly: Hot & Spicy Beef Cup of Noodles, Great Value Buttermilk Ranch, and Great Value brown gravy.

My cousin's husband is the manager of the sporting goods section at Walmart. If I need ammo I can just call him and he will pick it up for me and use his discount.

I use Mobil 1 Extended Performance in every one of my cars.

And like I've said before... Call me crazy but I just check it every few weeks and when I think it's dirty enough I change it. Just like the computer's will base your change interval based on driving habits. I do the same thing but with my eyes... With a good filter I can go 6-7k miles and I've taken motors apart that I've ran a LONG time like that and they were cleaner than they shoulda been. Think that oil has a lot of extra detergents cause when I get a car the first several changes are rather short interval cause that oil actually cleans the old sludge out. If possible I try to get a bigger than stock size oil filter too.

The only thing that needs broken in are the rings.
A flat tappet cam needs a 20 min at 2000 rpm break in according to comp cams. They say if not broken in properly you can round off the lobes. Rings need to seat too but I think you do that by varying rpm and getting after it lol.

I put synthetic in my car for the first time, and after 500 miles it was already getting dark. I was thinking the same thing. I may put a little seafoam in the oil 50-100 miles before changing to maybe clean it a bit more to sse if the oil will start staying cleaner longer.
