Two Morimoto projectors one cup...uh...I mean headlight...headlight



Are the aftermarket oe style headlights built alot cheaper than the actual factory ones. I Tried calling several salvage yards and they want between $120 and $150 per side. I can do the aftermarkets for $100 shipped for the pair. I was wondering if i would be better using my factory lens to do the retro if they are built way better and throwing the aftermarkets in just to have light till complete and for possibly selling it. If they are close to same quality then it does not matter. I just want the reto to be the best it can be. If it is worth it i will purchase another set of factory lights. gonna wait for the responces till i order 1 set ot another.

OEM (used GM) headlights and aftermarket are built pretty much the same and are pretty much the same quality in my experience. The main difference is that aftermarket (non GM) headlights are much easier to take apart and reseal.
 
Ok, questions for a single projector setup. I got the projectors and lens and in the process of installing. The question is for wiring. Should i be using the low beam factory wiring for the main power and then the high beam factory wiring to drop the high beam lens. Or, should i run a new power supply and use factory low beams to trigger the relay, with the factory high beam cable connected directly to the drop lens. I have not decided on which H1 bulb/ballast kit or which wattage kit to go with yet. let me know what ya think. If ya haven't figured i am coping driunkie's design with the turn signal in the high beam location, and led's in the corners.

If you want the headlights and highbeams (cutoff shields) to operate like normal then yes, the HID relay harness needs to be triggered by the headlight harness. You can just wire the highbeam (cutoff shields) to the actual highbeam wires on the OEM wiring.

Can i ask why always use a relay for the HID's??? I am running 3- 6000k kits right now in the stock locations using stock wires right to ballasts with no issues.

Is there a special relay for HID's or can i just do standard relays

With doing relays, Did you install resistors to get rid of bulb burnt out warnings. Or is there no issue with that.

Also, what kit/wattage H1's are you running in your morimotos. With a single set retro i am looking to get tons of light but not bothered by the 5-0 every night.
 
use relays so that your dont burn up your factory wiring....it can happen...probably not likely but it CAN....do you wanna risk burning down your GP cuz of a couple of wires? They're cheap insurance and they improve your light output. No resistors needed...it should be all plug and play...unless you make your own...then you might have to cut and splice some stuff....I just bought mine from DDM since they're 12 bucks a pop.
 


Relays do save your stock headlight wiring from damage but more so it prevents damage to the HID ballasts since they draw a lot of start up current. You starve a ballast of current at start up and it will eventually fail.

I use a 35 Watt kit with my Morimotos. 55 Watt kits aren't recommended with Morimoto projectors because of the increased heat that is associated with a 55 Watt kit. In my experience with HIDs I've never noticed a useful increase in light output from a 55 Watt kit versus a 35 Watt kit.

Thanks geddawngxp, Your explination on the ballast inrush power needs is good enough for me. i was not listaning to those that say( cause it will mess up) i hate genaric answers.

On my Aurora I had replaced my driver side headlight ballast and my driverside fog ballast and decided that was enough so I ran relay harnesses for both sets and never had any prob. In fact I am using the headlight ballasts off of the Aurora on the GXP now. Had em since Spring of 08.
 


ok, i now have all my parts for doing a single morimoto projector( for now). My question is how did you set for correct beam pattern. I was thinking about pulling about 10-12 feet from my garage door and then taking a pencil and marking where light hit and then trying to match with the projectors. I am not sure if this is a good way to do it or not. I am not sure how much adjustment( if any) i will have once mounted so i want to get it right. Any tips on how some of you did it would be appreciated.

Nice im starting to work on mine as well. What type of paint did you use to tint the reflectors and paint the reflector piece?
 
Just FYI. If you are doing a single retrofit with the morimotos. Instead of using a dremel to cut your hole, get yourself a 2 3/4 (2.75") holesaw. This works great and only takes 1-2 minutes to get your hole.Just make sure your run your drill on high and use light pressure (do not push too hard or you could shatter the lens). Also hace a vaccum or small brush to clean the groove out a couple times while drilling, otherwise it starts melting the dust(not a big deal if you dont mind the smoke). Once i am done i will post pics and more of my how-to's from my experience.

Why would you need to cut a 2 3/4 inch hole to mount a morimoto mini projector?

That is the size hole that is needed to be cut out of the reflctors in order for the Morimoto's to sit back far enough that the clear lens will fit back on. You could spend hours with a dremel and cut a sonewhat oval hole approx the same size to match the projectors shape but the holesaw was just way so easy to pass up

I've never cut a hole to fit morimoto's in with lense on.......

Dremeling takes about 10 minutes each headlight. Not understanding why you can't get the lense back on the headlight without cutting the hole? The lense fits on just fine, you just have to dremel the raised edge around the hole on the inside of the housings. I've never made the hole bigger!

There have been others that say the same thing but none have proven it. There is no possible way you can fit the morimoto ds2 mini projectors without making the hole considerably larger. The projectors sit a good 2 inches past the lens without creating a larger hole for the projectors to recess further back in the housing. If there were lens covers that had a bubble in them then possibly but i have never seen such a lens.

If you managed to somehow pull off a miracle, then by all means show us some pics.

I am just stating what myself and several other have already proven.
