The IncREDi-hoopdy Official 5-Speed Build

Let me start off by saying I just joined the forum less than a week ago, but you sir are one of my new heros!!! I`ve researched so much on 5 speed swaps and also the g6 gtp 6 speed swaps, and it seems to be a daunting task. Keep your head up serioulsy you nearly almost done!!! This is the best thread i`ve seen on the whole site keep us posted!

Jason. You have a cam and added some rockers that are supposedly 1.6 ratio, correct? It would seem that they can't be 1.6's or you weren't getting enough oil and the valves hung in the guides.

You have mentioned having the resources locally to gather parts. I assume that includes rods, valves and rockers, if not...i'll make a trip to the yard for you if you need it. Say the word.

There is a little humor if you take a sharpie and fill in the rest of the face, since you have eyebrows. I've seen it done a few times. I understand where you are at. I only thrashed transmissions though. I didn't graduate to the Brian school of totally Fubarring in 5 minutes or less. (c'mon..that's funny).

On bolts, I saw someone on here with studs for a good price the other day. Almost grabbed them ...just because.

To give you a little actual humor. Erich got the O2 out and it looked cross threaded. No idea how that's possible, sure looked fubared though.

The rockers have 1.6 stamped right on them. And they were sent to HS for the revisions which they said had already been done and they replaced some of the rollers that barely had wear. They aren't adjustables either, there was no little knob on them. The lifters were getting stuck, they were 3100 lifters after all since gm uses them in the 96-97 3800s.

Brian.. you are killing the "from the hip" diagnostics man.

Not sure how it may effect it. However they were definately bolted down properly on the flat side and not the curved side?

The rockers were installed properly. My only thought is the car hates me...or it's living up to it's name whether it be a "hoopdy" as in "IncRedi-hoopdy" or "Anna Nicole" being a money sucking whore.

Also, I'll be making a trip to a junkyard or something today and ordering up the new head gaskets and related parts. This is just A LOT worse than my original anticipation. What really gets me is the true cause is still unknown. If I had a definite "yeah, that thing f*cked up" diagnosis, I'd be reporting it just so no one else does anything that retarded, even if it were my own fault. The engine was cranked over repeatedly before initial start-up...the cam was lubed with actual camshaft assembly lube. Hell, there was oil dumped into the valley and all over the rockers as well as moly lube done on the roller tips as specified by Harland Sharp. I've been obsessively anal regarding the entire build. I just don't know what I could've missed or what went wrong.

If you have a chance at the jy can you grab my metal bumper? Please?

Are there any markings on your valve covers?

Lol no you told be your dad was going to get it but I don't recall you saying that he did.

Cars coming to you, now that's service!

Seriously tho, that sux, like majorly. I was so surprised to open this thread and see that kind of an update. Hopefully you get everything worked out and have better luck this next time. This is making me dread the thought of tearing down my other motor and starting a rebuild. Good Luck!!!

So kinda a mind afternoon update...9 bent valves (pics tonight)...the issue is in the lifters...of the ones I pulled with bent valves or pushrods, you cannot compress the lifters...at all...in a vice. My dad came up with a nifty contraption to measure the lift of the rocker arms (pics tonight,) and those are definitely not a cause and will be returning into the engine. So, all in all, the lifters seem to be the culprits...pushrods bent hopefully as a result. Thought those closely following the thread would like an update.

Also, for the guys joking around last night, I apologize for my horrible mood. I know you were trying to make light of the situation, but I was in no mood for it.

Any case of a teardown is not simple, but glad you narrowed it down and hopefully with some replacement lifters, pushrods and valves, you will have a smooth running engine

Thanks for the update Jason!

Hope i didnt piss ya off, i tried to play nice since i knew you were pissed.

Good to see a cause for the issue, unknown issues suck. Least now theres a resolution

Wow! Terrible luck man! Hope you get it all sorted out soon. Trust me, I know what kind of work you just put into your car for the getrag swap, and now this. Damn.

Ok, so fun update for today. I got the heads disassembled and checked for damage. No damage was found, all valve guides were fine, no valve seat damage, and no cracks in the heads. Here is my militia of bent valves:

Before the heads were completely disassembled, my dad had a brilliant idea; we could check the lift difference between the stock rockers and the HS 1.6's. My dad built a handy jig that goes where the pushrod would go in the rocker....then just torque down the rocker arm and measure valve opening distance. Needless to say, my HS 1.6's will in fact be returning to the engine as they are definitely not the culprit. Here's the handy jig:

We then put a lifter in the vice with the same handy jig and tried to see how much pressure it took to compress it. It didn't compress...locked up solid. So, my determination is strictly lifter failure once pumped up.

After this, I needed parts...so my dad got the Bonneville delivered that he bought strictly for the tires and battery. It has a decent running 3800 but it has high mileage, and the rear frame is rotted beyond repair. So, I'm just pulling the parts I need and scrapping the rest.

In between all this, I did get my door panels all removed so undercoating can be done, and I also swapped out my rear speakers. I then decided that I'm keeping my 2 12w6's for now since my funds are running low due to the rest of the build. I started building a sealed enclosure for them that will fit under the rear strut tower brace and tight against the back seat. I'll take pics when it's done.
