I'm with Scott...didn't see the Sc idler stand or the specific bolts that go with it. They are a slightly different thread like 1.25 vs 1.50. Personally........... I'd drop those heads off to the machine shop, have them tanked, fluxed, painted and assembled with a valve job. If you wanted to plan ahead, have the seats machined to 1.800 so that you had the correct pressures on with aftermarket springs.

Everything will be done myself. I'm not spending more money by dropping it off at the machine shop. I'm lapping the valves and putting new valve seals on. After I clean down the heads, I'll check the level. I'll take the valves out and wire wheel the top of the head to get it all clean.

Not sure why GM decided to put an entire stem right in the opening of the TB. Such and air restriction.



But I got it all clean and was able to free it up!

so the butter fly moves now? you soak it, or just f with it till if moved?

Just sprayed a lot of brake clean in it and let it soak for a minute or two, and took a pliers with rubber ends and hit the valve while pushing on the spring thing on the outside and it eventually broke loose.

he means a newer year tb and maf, you change the maf file in the tune to the new maf, and poof.

Drained the oil out of the S/C, was gonna separate the snout, but ran out of time. I'll do that this weekend.

Also cleaned more of the TB, scraped the bottom of the S/C clean, and blew compressed air everywhere to clean it all. Mainly in coolant ports and such.

Took some effort, but it's off. Someone has been in here before, which makes sense as I was told it has been rebuilt.

Nifty, never seen the inside of one. So, what do you look at to tell what's been rebuilt? (noob here, lol)

I would assume a true rebuild has new bearings pressed in the case and greased. Probably new snout seals / bearings
Also the coupler is replaced.


What is shocking is there is a zzp coupler installed (green) and apparently it's already shot. OP said there is a lot of play in it.
I've seen OEM couplers tight as can be with over 120k miles on them.

Maybe ill go back to ordering OEM ones

Interesting. Car it came off of had 180k, a 3.4" and no supporting mods (unless you count straight-piped with huge rice-y muffs out back and a K&N CAI)...., so ya never know. It felt more solid than my 200k+ S/C, I guess I just did what I was told and took a video and it seemed good, lol.

But, like, how can you tell the coupler is shot?

When you jerk the pulley back and forth by hand, you shouldn't feel any play.

not really a big deal at all. Changing a coupler is just as easy as changing your plugs and oil.

Literally place your hand on the pulley and snap it back and forth. You'll know
