Starting Hptuners

hello everyone ! I have a few questions for you , i bought the tuner software last year and me and my brother started tuning it , i got as far as driving it through 2 drive cycles and saving the files then everyday life stuff got in the way and the car sat in the garage the last year . Started having a little free time and want to finish tuning it , my question is is that now that i have waited so long its like looking at something i've never seen before lol already new to the tuning world do you think i am better off starting from step 1 again ? reset pcm to stock and start from post 1 and actually finish it ? Or risk trying to figure out how far i am and keep moving forward? but truthfully i dont even know where i stopped and how i got there ! Any input would be greatly appreciated . Thanks

[QUOTE/]Remember we are only scaling from 7000hz up in the maf table like so.

Now we do not want any spikes in the maf table so in the cells before 7000hz scale them so they will flow with the rest of the table..[/QUOTE]

A little confused to as what he means by scale them before 7k...am I "smoothing" the entire table? Smoothing just before 7k? When he means scale them i assume that's what he means. Right?

When I do long runs for getting LTFT and MAF data I only ever go to 7,000hz when I enter the new data.

I only ever adjust the MAF above 7,000 when I have to add or take away fuel.

I'm assuming 7000 hz is the point where you hit power enrichment? I don't think it would be the same for the 04+ guys though with different mafs and other variables as compared to the 97-03?

Yeah i have never adjusted the 7k+ yet. I also would have to do it with the narrow band since I don't have a wideband yet. I think I might wait until I get one before I start adjusting that.

You can still knock out your maf tune though with stft vs mass air flow. As long as you get your stft dialed in your ltft should be in line as well.

Just outta curiosity what kinda power were you getting outta your car after your tune i will be doin similar tunes but I wont have to deal with torque management because the motors goin in a fiero with a 5 speed and I wanna know realistically what kinda power I will be making.

I've been having trouble configuring my MAF LTFT table in the histogram. I've followed the write up directions twice, but I haven't even gotten a table in the histogram. The only difference I can see between the write up and my set up is the value in the units selection. It's supposed to be %, but the selection for that option is blank. Is that my prob, or am I missing something?

All of this tuning lingo is making my head spin. Is there someone who knows how to tune in CA. I have a 2006 GXP that I want tuned. Who is available to do it for me? Thanks

.

The numbers we are looking for here are mid 11s for a supercharged car or if you are using a narrow band the 940mv range. In that pic I am running very rich, I would need to pull some fueling by scaling the maf table in the editor. Small changes are the best. 2% at a time are ok if you are very far off like I am.

To add fuel you will need to add to the table by multiplying by 1.02, if you need to pull fuel you need to multiply by -1.02. Remember we are only scaling from 7000hz up in the maf table like so.

I believe you would want to multiply by .98 to reduce fueling not a negative number...

Perhaps when this was made, you could do that with whatever version of HPT was out. Likely 2.22 or 2.23.

Now with 2.24 and the beta 2.25, just doing .98 is the only way to reduce the number.

I dont think so. If you multiply a positive number with a negative number, you will get a negative number. Regardless of the HPT version number. The proper way is the multiply by less than 1 to reduce and more than 1 to add.

When calibrating my 2012 supercharged F150 That's how I did it. X1.02 to add 2% and X0.98 to remove 2%. Worked out great.

On another note. When tuning using the WB, are you guys just removing the stock NB and plugging the WB in or are you welding a new plug in for the WB? I would think for open loop pulling the NB and putting a WB in would be fine. This will be my first time tuning a vehicle that didn't have factory WB sensors.

thanks for this write up. way more information for beginners than on the hptuner website itself. you really broke down the basics. pictures helped alot. i used this tutorial to tune my 06 denali. really woke up that little 5.3. now i just have to get finished swapping my engine in my 05 gtp. now that i know a little something i can tune my gtp and trans am. thanks again.

Infomation on HP Tuners forums is there, you just have to search for it. Or look for similar related things to find answers.

There are just too many people that don't have a damn clue what they just bought into and want to be spooned everything. The other problem is that too many people try to tune a modded vehicle as the first thing they learn with, they just make it 5x harder on themselves. I learned how to use it with a stock grand prix, then I modded it. Again with a stock GEN 3 LS V8 with my 2006 Sierra and again with my 2010 and now 2012 Silveado's for the GEN 4 computers. It makes everything so much better when the vehicle is stock and you see how everything works when stock.

I am still learning new things all the time and whats help me is knowing how the basics work. I have never done a speed density turbo setup on a LS V8 before but with all the time spent reading and using HPT on my personal stuff I know a great amount without having done it. I know the all the basic and even help others because I know what the tables are saying and the ways to change them.

The biggest things I say are to read, buy books to help understand how certain things mean and do. Then if that is not enough they have online training courses and the tuning school that people can attend. Sure it's alot more money but the knowledge you can gain from it is well worth the cost to most people.
