Need some help finding out Wats wrong with my 98 GTP, it started smoking from one day to another and I don't know why it is smoking?? Any reasons why plzz let me know??

Being an intro thread. Hi and welcome to the forum.

To solve the issues.. please post up in the mechanical section wtih a lot of detail. Things like the color of the smoke, if you are low on coolant, if the smoke smells sweet or not etc. will help diagnose and help you fix it up.

Welcome. X3^^ what color is the smoke? Black, white? If it's white you probably have a blown head gasket. Or worse case a cracked head. Black smoke probably broken rings, piston. From there it only gets worse. IMO

A bad head gasket is less common than being being struck by lightning 3 times in a row. Cracked heads while common are typically such small cracks that there's no symptoms, rings aren't overly common either as they don't wear the bore much ...

chipped piston.. now you got one I could get behind with that potential disgnosis.. However for all we know..it's external to the engine. Like a valve cover leak .

I think the bigger question here is what is it smoking?

Smoking tends to be started mostly by peer pressure. Has your car been hanging out with other cars that are into that sort of thing. I know at a younger age I was influenced alot in school to do it, but never picked up on the habit.

It could also be a result from stress. Have you been stressing the car alot lately? Maybe all it needs is a hug and a good wax job, sit down and have a good heart to heart and it may help things along.

If all else fails, some therapy at the local Mechanics may be needed to shake this awful habit :D
 


It is white smoke and smells sweet I think it might be the intake gasket or water getting into the oil or gas but it only smokes wen i step on the gas ....
 


This is the post I was going to make before I noticed you were in Texas. Since I don't know that this applies down there, take this bit of info however you want.


"White smoke" from an exhaust tail pipe is not white smoke but rather steam. More noticeable during engine warm-up and some times after warm up in cold weather. The steam is also accompanied by water drips from some exhaust system components, a by-product of combustion.

Nothing to worry about as long as the engine stays within normal operating temperatures.


You can tell the difference between steam and smoke. steam will disappear and smoke will linger in the air.
 
Ive let it run for 2 days now and it smells like oil so i thinkmima pull out the engine and do an overhual cuz i am tired of it smoking
 


Sooooo let's try and diagnose this one.

Did you find any coolant or traces of it in the LIM or SC?
TB gasket/SC gasket typical culprit

LIM gaskets..can do this..but you just did them. So rule them out.

Chipped piston would typically foul a plug ...or damage it initially. Have you had any plugs get damaged?
 
Okay gents,
I am also a new member of the GPF. In ways the issue w/my 98' GT coupe 3.8L seem similar so I'd also like to get ur feedback on the matter at hand. I changed my upper & lower intake gaskets well over 3 weeks ago now. They definately needed to be changed. Redefined bad. I replaced the upper intake plenum & gasket as well as the lower intake gasket set & did the RTV seals at corners needed. No anti-freeze coolant loss at all has occurred since then. BUT...from day one after changing the gaskets I'm still puffing white smoke especially upon start-up. I'm losing at least one quart of oil per week that I never lost before & nothing is on the ground. There are some days that I will smoke out my entire street...looking like a crop duster plane just landed. Other days like today...it hardly smoked at all. The engine is running rough & I have pulled the #6 cylinder plug & replaced it after my OBDII meter requested it. Plugs were brand new after intakes were completed. The plug I pulled had a small amount of oil on it. Replaced w/new again & have checked since then & looks fine. Also, PCV valve is brand new that came with the new upper intake plenum. I have looked at all I know to check but can't detect the problem child. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Well chuck since you are losing oil, we know where to start. Since you are burning it.. we definately know where to aim.

PCV is the most common and likely cause. Pull that baby out. ensure the cap has an o-ring on it. Then ensure there's a lower o-ring in there too. One should be below and one above.
 
Pulled them out yesterday to check...& yes both O-rings were there & in place brand new just as the PCV itself was. I didn't see anything out of place or missing.
