sc seal, among other things

ZZPerformance - Modular Pulley System #ZZ-38MPS

My SC appears to be leaking. there is an oily residue on the sc and kind of going over the intake. i'm just figuring that is what the residue is. Its kind of a dirty ring around the pulley, too.

One of my question is do kits like these come with a seal or gasket? i can't tell what the little black thing is on the bottom right in the picture. there wasn't a gasket or seal available by itself that I saw on the website.

since its gotta be pulled and fixed i figured i might as well put one of these on there just in case somewhere down the line i wanted to change sizes. i was going to get a 3.5 with this kit. its a 2001 gtp special edition. got it for 2100. 175k with a newly "overhauled" transmission. my third gtp.

stuff i have to do to the car.....valve gaskets and cat converter leaks and resonator has holes in it. needs at least one axle, outer tie rods, hubs. i have an extra stock converter and am going to just have a pipe put in where the resonator is. probably put plugs and wires on it. it doesn't appear to be leaking coolant anywhere but its pretty greasy so i need to clean it up a bit to tell if it needs intake done.

i'm kind of thinking about putting headers on it. hoping i don't have to go underneath to do the rear headers and maybe with all the stuff off doing valve covers they can fit in the top side? i read the headers write up and was hoping not to have to do it that way. any suggestion on which ones to get? the ones i was looking at were like 100 bucks or something. i haven't looked into this a lot, really. so what do you guys use? i'm not planning on building this thing up a lot, btw. headers with a stock cat work? any other things need to go with it?

just seen a lot of mixed things about what is needed for pulley drops, how effective which headers are, having the ubend delete done or having a high flow cat on it. so, idk if its worth doing for 3.5 or if it just tossing money. if nothing else, different headers will look better than those rusty stock ones with the alien tin foil on them. they're probably a pain to get off......:th_shakinghead2:

i typed supercharger snout seal replacement, or something to that effect, in the search bar and found one that had no directions other than, remove snout. put seal on. put snout back on:th_thumbsup-wink:

that was the only thread that popped up.

i did, however, find one on zzp website in another section and it said no special tools required. well, if its that simple as just the bolt and taking the pulley off.....i was under the impression the snout had to be pulled off with a special puller.

Eaton - EATON Snout Seal #ETN-101687

i've never taken one apart. stuff is usually easy once you do it. just not doing it ever you don't know what to expect.

so i would need to have the pulley pulled off to get to snout seal? that is what i'm thinking based on those pictures.

looks like i was getting my terms mixed up above.

thanks guys:th_thumb-up:

headers is a must should be first thing after maint. is done
i'm gonna have to convince my wife i need them:th_laugh-lol2:

i started checking some out-from 175 to 800. i was hoping there was system that is a basic replacement for the stock set-up where the stock converter is still in place. i realize that isn't going to be the most optimal thing for a ton of flow but i'm not looking for a total exhaust replacement.

found these in another thread
Pontiac Performance Racing Products for International Sales from SSAutochrome Inc.
but those appear to be incompatable with a stock cat.

i know i've come across some ported headers that had some kind of coating or paint somewhere but i can't remember where i found them. they didn't appear to have the piece that wraps around and connects the two together, though. i guess the stock pipe is fine there for that set up.....

i also saw the pace setters and 500 bucks is getting too much and i'm not sure if it really is overkill for what i want.

some backstory as to why i'm wanting to keep the stock cat

i had what was essentially a "straight" pipe with no cat and just the second 02 sensor on another car. it sounded great. it killed mpg by 4-6 mpg and it didn't exactly run well. it didn't help with power either. maybe a tune would have cleaned that up idk. but its not something i want to deal with and i'm not wanting to get a new high flow cat, although 130 bucks on zzp isn't bad. they say on there to run a 3.4 with their cat and tstat and preprogrammed pcm and cai. but everyone here says headers but i'm not sure if people mean headers with different cat, or no cat, or if the headers spoken of have all that in the design. and i don't want to do 3.4 because of the knock potential. zz also states you can run 3.5 stock and i've talked to a few dudes who have smaller pulleys with no other mods.

maybe play it a little safe and it will look cooler under the hood and get a little more boost is what i'm thinking.

it was 99. two mechanics told me to put the cat back on. one was a guy i knew at the shop. he said it would run like Sh%$ without it before i did it. he was the first to drive it. came back and said it had misfire. sure enough on cylinder 3. i drove it like that for couple months. it would kind of backfire if u stayed on gas too hard. i eventually took it to trans shop for unrelated stuff and their guy said he wouldnt even scan it until it was back on because he wouldnt be able to deduce what the problem was until it was taken care of. so i had the pipe cut and put a cat on it. sure enough, back up to 28 mpgs. somepoint i had it scanned again and no misfire, no "backfire." ran like a champ after that except it would occasionally not go into 4th.

the transmission mechanic put his hands over his eyes and said "this is how your computer operates without the converter on." clear enough picture. he was right. i guess if you tuned it it would change the story but it was all factory.

Having no cat won't make your car run bad at all. You are taking about a gp right? Something else was up

yeah, it was 99 gtp. no mods other than that exhaust. maybe it leaked, idk. engine light was on the whole time i had that on. but the same o2 sensor was used on both stock and pipe. i didn't think it would matter much but two guys who know a lot more than me said it would.

i changed the egr valve in between if i remember right but the mpg and misfire was issue right up until i went back. maybe the misfire was from a leak.

you have a tune on yours, right? when i read about what is in a tune usually the no cat is in there, bypassing the second o2 sensor i guess. or at least changing the parameters.

You must have had some other issue. If the pipe was leaking before the front o2 that'll cause you problems.
