Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

If the sensors have volatage and they show knock when you smack the block with a hammer they are working just fine. For whatever reason some of those trucks/harnesses will still toss a code even with everything is replaced with new parts.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

Well let me ask you this... With those codes off, will the PCM still see and adjust for knock? Or is it blind to those sensors?

I know I need to take it for a drive and scan it, but if there's no legitimate knock I wouldn't know anyway.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

As far as I know they should still work with the codes off. Can't hurt to just try it and then smack the block with a hammer and see what they read out.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

I have to make a 20 minute drive tomorrow evening. I'll hook up the scanner to do some data logging. If I remember, I'll give the block a little tap tap after I start logging to see if it shows up on the scan.

Today was very productive. Ground the needed clearance in the steering stops for the 2 piston caliper.

Perfect for me anyway. :D

Next burnout will be in 1080p or 4k @60FPS without the waterproof case. Should look and sound slightly better. Started installing the CalTracs. I got to step 2. Instructions say "press" the old front spring bushing out... Right... Them things are coming out in pieces.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Working my way through the Caltrac instal. It's been a battle every step so far. To get the right spring out, I had to drop the exhaust. To get the left spring out, I had to (slightly) drop the gas tank.

To get the bushings out of the spring eyes, I had to drill the rubber then slit the steel outer sleeve. I was then able to tap it out with a punch. To get the solid aluminum bushings in was an exercise in persistence. Bench vise, long pipe, and hammer. Got the springs installed with the front portion of the Caltrac. Got the spring plates installed. Went to screw in the torque bar, and it hit the overload. Called it a night right there. I'll zip about 5" off the front overload to clear the torque bar tomorrow.

I feel like maybe I didn't get my money's worth on this tub of Wal-Mart grease

But it was only like $4, so maybe I did? Anyhow, Hoping to button this up sometime tomorrow!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Looks like someone went "American Pie" on that tub of grease....lol. Caltrac setup looks sweet! Looking forward to seeing it in action...

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

That was my first thought in the grease too lol. Were any of these complications mentioned in the destructions?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 100% Road legal!!

Did you put the spring eye bolts back facing the other way? Two new or JY bolts might have saved time since you could chop the old ones.

Carving out the rubber then splitting the sleeve sounds like SOP to me. Lots of guys just torch the rubber out... for the burnout smell I reckon;)

I did. No way I'm going through that again. I talked to my tech support guy (aka, the tree this apple fell from) and he figures they run it that way in case of a side impact. The bolt head is less likely to puncture the tank than the excess bolt that sticks through. I'm willing to take the risk...

If only. :p

The drilling process generated enough heat. The smell was very familiar. :th_winking:

Caltracs are fully installed and have their preliminary adjustment. Took it out for a quick spin. Back end has a slightly stiffer ride, but the wheel hop is GONE. Did a footbrake launch on clean pavement and it was solid planted wheel spin. If I get a set of sticky tires, this thing should launch hard.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Nice looking install on those CalTracs. No more wheel hop and still functions as a toy hauler. A fast toy hauler at that. Winning.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

I have to say, loading the quads in the back of the S10 was far easier than loading them in the back of the '84 K10. Should be even easier after I drop it another inch to level it out.

I finally sold the stock S10 rear end. Managed to get $80 for it. That puts the raw cost of the S10 somewhere around $220. That was the last of the S10 take off parts.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Enjoying the fruits of my labor!

You can hear it bog when it hits 3rd. Should have pulled it down into 2nd. Next time.
