Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Sounds AWESOME... Do you carry a spare tire? 3rd gear brakestands can be tough on older tires.

I don't stray to far from home. Flat tire on a steel wheel... Poor man's run flat.

that must feel so satisfying. :th_thumb-up:

YES! Except for the loose baffle in the muffler. Sounds terrible. I think I've got an easy fix for that though.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Well I took care of the muffler rattle. For now at least. I used an old stethoscope to figure out exactly where the rattle was coming from. Then I gently adjusted the outside of the offending muffler with a pry bar. $0.

Got these in the mail yesterday. Should put the truck dead level when unloaded. As an added bonus, they'll use up most of the excess threads on the U-bolts.

Probably be a couple weeks before they go in though. I'm tired of disassembling the rear on this truck.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Finished the fuel pump retrofit. Here's an AEM 50-1200 in a stock S10 bucket. Not sure when I'll install, but at least it's ready whenever.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

Sounding good, Brandon. Reminded me of my ride so much I had to go watch an earful of purple car vids. Must manual low for best vids! Mine shifts after about one wheel rev otherwise. Your new camera sounds a lot better, keep the tires fryin.:th_thumb-up:

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

You ask and I deliver! I finished installing the wideband today. Took it out for a little drive to verify functionality. Everything works great!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Took a drive out to the Pull a part today. Ran the truck up to 75 on the highway for the first time. Ride was smooth. No driveline vibrations. I'm thinking my next rear will have 3:73's instead of the current 4:10's. 3000 rpm at 75 was a bit much...

While I was there I grabbed a jack cover screw, a fuel level buffer module and a couple PCM plug ends. Spun the cover screw in before I left the parking lot. Tried the buffer module when I got home. No change in the gauge. Still reads empty. Turned the plug ends into a couple offboard tuning interfaces.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

you need to add 04+ connectors onto your off boards. Look very nice. Where do you get the black boxes?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Thanks Bill. I might add the 04+ connectors to one in the future. Right now I'm just concerned with the LS swap guys running the 411 PCM.

Boxes come from ebay. About a buck a piece. Search "Black Plastic Cover Project Electronic Instrument Case Enclosure Box" About the perfect size to fit the mess of wires inside.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Well I laid out the access hatch. The "Y" dimension, though not centered over the pump, is big enough to land the cuts on the crossmembers. The "X" dimension places the cuts in the valley of the bed ribs and close to center over the pump.

That look about right?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

I am shocked that you did all that nice work but now are chopping for pump access. Maybe I just don' t understand the plan, but hole in bed floor always screams lazy at me. Perhaps because of how many beds I've removed for piddly insurance work. How do you plan to secure a lid for that?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Working the bugs out

That was Monday morning harsh, sorry. I know you will do something presentable and realize we had that conversation before.

Hey man, no offense taken. I get where you're coming from. You're a body guy. You see someone going at a class "A" panel with a cutoff wheel and you have to cringe a little. Like when I see some home gamer drilling a 1/2" hole in steel at 5000 with their Dewalt hand drill, blowing purple slivers all over the place. It's just who we are.

On this truck, I have to look at the big picture. Take the better part of an afternoon unbolting and lifting the bed (by myself) to access the pump, or cut a clean hatch. Plus, I can almost guarantee I'll be in there multiple times. If I could be certain it was a one shot deal I'd lift the bed, but I have terrible luck with fuel pumps. I'm sure I'll need to get in there again. Plus, the bed floor is already pretty beat up from it's previous life as an elevator company service truck. Many dents and holes from parts and toolboxes. It's a 20 year old, dime a dozen pickup truck. No way I would cut up a pristine 2007 Colorado or something like that.

Hey, even the Grand Prix's had an access hole for the fuel pump. Granted it was in the trunk covered by carpet, but whatever. :D

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Well here's the result of the access hatch cut and repair. I think it turned out okay. Long term, I'd like to get a bed mat or tonneau cover, but this is good enough for now. Rattle can bed liner and 8 #8 x 3/8" sheet metal screws. All edges deburred and safe for handling.

IMAG1288_zpsm90tfx6t.jpg

Am I thrilled about my decision to cut the bed? No. However, I know myself well enough to be certain of one thing; If I had chosen to raise the bed, the entire time I was fighting my way though, I'd be saying to myself "Should have just cut a hole in the bed. It's a beat up fleet truck."

Greener grass, other side and so forth.

Add more black squares to complete the checkered flag look!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

I don't know how far you're taking this thing, and this'll sound completely way too ridiculous and time consuming anyway.

But, wood makes a good concealable hatch.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Now with CalTracs!

Where I was headed with that. That's like, wouldn't put anything in there good tho.
