your housing and bolts are dirty tsk tsk

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

That's my core/spare 80e. You know I wouldn't allow that dirt on the final build!

Driveshaft is fixed. I sent those pictures to the driveshaft guy last night in an email. Figured that would be be better than trying to explain what was going on. He looked them over and called me right back. Told me to bring the the shaft back and he would take care of it, no charge. We got to talking and he confirmed what I suspected. My measurements were correct, the shaft was made correctly, but because that was originally a 4wd slip yoke, it's way longer that necessary and bottoming out on the outside of the yoke. His plan was to cut about 1-1/4" off, making it more comparable to a standard 2wd shaft. By doing that, it would bottom out on the inside and outside at about the same time and give me maximum travel. Since dude was super cool, and took good care of me originally, I offered to just cut it myself. Highly recommend these guys if you need driveshaft work in Tucson.

And here's the finished product.

Now I have a full 1-1/2" of travel on the yoke, and 4" of spline engagement. With that taken care of, I was able to instal the pinion shims.

Bolted the rear back in, and threw the wheels on. Before I dropped it on the ground, I put it in drive just to see if it would spin the wheels. It did. Gonna toss another gallon of ATF in it tomorrow and take it for a test drive!

When I saw that yoke I thought chop saw. Good going, Brandon. Looking forward to reports from the streets!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 1st drive... Success!

Thanks Matt. All this work is starting to pay off!

Well, first drive was a success. Took it around the block a couple times without incident. Only went maybe half throttle, but I was still impressed. Ran it just long enough to verify the fan control worked.

And, of course, had to spin the tires a little.

Only problem was when I dumped a bunch of trans fluid over the funnel like a boob. Them horizontal dip stick tubes can be tricky

how she sound? if its quiet total sleeper, cause it looks like a 4 cyl truck lol

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 1st drive... Success!

At idle, outside on the street.... It's pretty docile. You could talk without yelling right next to it. When you crack the throttle... It's a whole different story.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 1st drive... Success!

Ordered my "catalytic convertors" the other day, and they arrived today. They've been out of stock for over a month so the timing couldn't be better. Here's the rough layout

Got a chance to talk to the exhaust guy at the local shop. Another cool guy. He was totally okay with hanging the mufflers and "cats" that I provide. Unfortunately, he's booked for about a week. Not a huge deal. That will give me time to decide how I want the exhaust run...

My thinking is; true duals with an x pipe if there's room (and it's not too expensive) with both pipes exiting out the right side, high behind the tire. Basically just doubling the single exit that was there originally.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 1st drive... Success!

I was hoping you would make this thing quiet so when you wanna blow the doors off someone it totally catches them off guard lol

Great work man, super jealous

Very nice! I came this close >>>>ll<<<<< to installing a 1997 Vortec 350 in my 2000 Blazer, it would have been fun!

Well, it won't be really quiet, but I still think I'll surprise people by looks alone. Don't be jealous, go build one!

I think a gen2 vortec motor would have been an easier instal as far as wiring is concerned, but I'm happy for the more modern architecture and the extra cubes.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - 1st drive... Success!

Wiring... it's easy. Please stop scaring the kiddies Brandon. You built a trans, wiring is cake in comparison

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

If I had this truck I might be curious enough to flip the keys to an unsuspecting but good driving loved one who needs to borrow it for a sec and who takes the truck at face value. With hidden camera at driver's face. They might crap a moon rock on the seat and then I'd be rich. My brother comes to mind, he had an iron duke S-10. If it sounded halfway like a V6 with busted muffs does, it might take a block or two to realize whats up under the hood if you don't suspect it.:th_king-evil:

Fixed.

It's a sliding scale. Sure, wiring this swap wasn't impossible, but wiring a black box 5.7 vortec would have been less impossible. FWIW, I don't think wiring was the most difficult part either.

Truth be told, I've had this thought many times. Haha! Only no hidden cameras. I'd have to be in the passenger seat. Not ready to hand over full control just yet. At least not until there's a substantial brake upgrade...

So I took it around the block a couple more times today. Topped off the trans fluid, and diff oil. Still need to figure out the speedo issue. But since it was out, I had to try something again. Wheel hop is definitely going to be an issue.

Can't wait to see how well it makes circles!
