Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Getting my rear end in shape.

Lopped the bottom ear off the sway bar bracket to clear the shock

Started pulling the S10 rear

And the 8.8 in

I need to stretch the holes for the lower mounts a bit. If all goes well, I should have this thing fully mounted tomorrow and maybe even get a jump on bleeding the brakes.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Getting my rear end in shape.

How come Chevrolet never got on the rear disc bandwagon on the trucks? we may never know.. Looking great sir!

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Getting my rear end in shape.

They did.

99-02 trucks had rear disc, then it went to rear drums from 03-13 and 14+ had rear disc. All tahoes, yukons, suburbans use rear disc from 99-17+.

Drums are cheaper and in many peoples eyes worked better in many applications and needed no upkeep for 100k miles.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Getting my rear end in shape.

i had drums on my 97 gmc hd, they sucked and warped out. and they weigh in around 50 lbs lol damn things were huge, 8 lug life.

my 03 gmc had rear calipers, same as the fronts, dual piston monsters, truck stopped way better then the 97, funny thing was the rear pads wore out before the fronts every time. they added a lot more rear brake it seems.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Getting my rear end in shape.

Rear end is in. Brakes are bled (I think). Wheels are on. Measured for the driveshaft. Should be dropping it off on Monday.

And my shorter screws came today, so I should be able to pop the cover on tomorrow or Monday.

feel like a two tone paint job? you're 1/2 way there already lol

HS kids build this one.

i think we found someone who dont know the farm truck? is that even possible?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

Whelp, good news and bad news... Good news; fancy diffy cover is on. I'll let it cure for a day, and probably fill tomorrow.

IMAG1152_zpslbnoiq7l.jpg

Bad news; pinion angle is way off. Supposed to be 4° up, and it's actually 3° down for a total of 7° off. I (falsely) assumed the perches were level to the ground when the rear was installed and went off that... Derp. I'm going to put it all together and see how bad it is. If it's tolerable, I'll just drive it till I build the next rear and make corrections to that one. If it's un-drivable, I'll get some 6° or 7° correction shims to get me through till I build the next rear. Either way, it'll get corrected next time.

So, to be clear, with the rear end sitting on jack stands and the perches level to the ground, I need the pinion 10° nose up to achieve 4° nose up when installed. Lesson learned.

Also, hit the old cats with the wire wheel. They shined up really nice.

I found a part number on them too. Did a quick Google and turns out they're factory original. Something like $700 retail. Now I know they aren't worth anything near that, but I wonder if there isn't more than just scrap value there... Maybe to someone in a state with really strict emission laws? Like, I thought I remember seeing that in California you can not run an aftermarket cat. Maybe not. I dunno. Just seems like there's too much value there to use just the case to pass a visual inspection.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

I don't remember if I saw this here or on another forum, but I think it's a great demonstration. Kinda lays it out in a way that my brain can process why angle and phasing are important.

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

thats cool. why you want that drive shaft straight.

i could see that being how they figure out front 4x4 axles so both front wheels turn the same speed as well. or fwd cars as well. science is cool aint it?

Re: Project LQ4 - V8 S10 - Almost time to make the doughnuts

That is a great video. I love the guys that run unbalanced square driveshafts, AND large diameter unbalanced tires. They all claim their rig drives pretty good on the road. Maybe compaired to a paint-shaker. LOL

I friggin love physics!

And maybe at like 20 mph. Definitely not at highway speeds!

So I dropped off the driveshaft today. Should have it back in a couple days at most. Also filled the rear. Decided to be a guinea pig and try the dirt cheap Wal-Mart supertech synthetic. Claims to be for LSD's. For $6 a quart, I had to give it a shot. Especially since this rear is only temporary.
