You can certainly run a 3.5 with headers..hell, I've seen people run 3.4 with no knock without headers. It's all about the tune and the individual car.........

Welcome to the community. My best advice would be to branch out and look at other forums like gpona.com, and clubgp.com when doing research about new mods. Don't log into that "safely modding" thread and treat it as the bible of modding, it's far from it.

You've seen people run a 3.4 on a gen v without headers and without knock? Were they running 60# inj or something to keep the knock at bay?

I know it's hard for you to fathom, since I'm sure you've taken everything you have read on here as the gospel, but it's absolutely possible. Other supporting mods were in place, and its what we call a "factory freak".
 
speaking of the death of pontiac, I was glad to se NHRA is still using GXP's in Pro stock...next year they are switching to camaros tho...bummer

I'd rather just be safe than sorry. I had to run 1.9's on my gen 3 just to run a 3.4. OP just make sure you scan for kr when you do start modding more.

Seen a GenV run a 3.4 on headers. Runs a tad too rich, crazy knock at the top end of 3rd. I'm sure if it was tuned a bit more carefully, it would run fine, but from what I've seen, a 3.6 + headers is faster and makes more hp, given that both are tuned well.
