I tried the fingernail test and they aren't that deep. It probably just needs a different pad and either stronger polish or compound.
On a 8 year old swirled car your best bet would be a 5 inch backing plate with some 5 inch flat pads...orange and white.
Orange for the Ultimate and white for the polish. I prefer Lake Country pads but Meguiars new pads are supposed to be hot.
The initial pad purchase should be 3 orange and 3 white.
You will get those orange pads loaded and dirty the first time you do a 3 step.
You can just wash them in the sink with dawn and spin them out with the DA. You will probably end up using around 6 orange pad cycles if done correctly.
And that is with cleaning on the fly
The white you will probably get by with one for the top and one for the sides since all the crud should be removed by then.
Next year when you do the car you should be able to just use the white pads and polish to get the grime and swirls.
So yep... mo money mo money
