Engine help

Ok, just got back from vac
I want to start putting the engine back together
Talk to some guys at work and they suggested that I should take a look at the timing belt and maybe change it
Should I or is it fine
One more thing, I have all this gaskets and O rings that I don't know where they go :(

Can I get some help in figuring out the ones that I need to replace
Thanks

So I got the engine in, but I have 3 questions
1-How many bolts hold the engine and trans together

2-Now that is barely any antifreeze in the engine and radiator can I use 50/50
I was still using the original antifreeze

3-How do I bleed the air out of the radiator, just in case it over heats

Just a small warning when you are ready to put antifreeze in leave the thermostat housing open and fill until liquid can be seen in the thermostat well and then install thermostat and finish filling also it will bubble air from the radiator a little so fill and wait and refill until it stops going in. With all the water out of the eng as you have done putting the thermostat in and trying to fill from the top of the radiator can cause a air bubble to form behind the thermostat because it is closed and when you start the eng it will over heat because the thermostat is in air not liquid and will not open. You can see this when first starting eng and it is warming up the temp gauge in the dash will not start to rise as the eng heats up like normal. The screw on top of the thermostat housing is where you can bleed air out after the thermostat opens.

I will do that, thanks

There are 5 bolts.. that hole you see is for a dowel and not a bolt.

Or.. you could leave the tstat in, fill it up.. run it for a minute and turn it off. Do this a couple of times and it'll burp itself out 99% of the time.

I think that I have only four in, I will make sure when I get home

you shouldn't mix the dexcool with the green stuff. you should have it flushed and get all that dexcool out of there.

EHB is right. dont add coolant yet. fill the block with water, after the hoses are on, then fill the rad, then follow my flush how to.

how to flush coolant.

remove the t stat, put the t stat housing back on, take the upper hose off the radiator, then push it down to the ground to a bucket or let it fly.

get your garden hose out, put it in the rad turn it on, then fire up the car, let it run till clear water pumps out the top hose.

then turn the hose off, run the car till no more water comes out the upper hose. then turn it off.

put your t stat back in, with new gasket, the upper hose back on.

now take 1 gallon of full strength green antifreeze, not the 50/50 crap. ( parts store cheap green is fine to use) dump the whole gallon in the radiator, fire up the car, fill the rad with hose water till its full. top as needed till its ready to be bled of air. it will burp and take coolant as the water in the block warms up the t stat opens up for a few seconds till cold coolant hits it and it shuts again.

now to bleed the air out, let it idle rad cap off till the fans turn on, (when the fans are on the temp is over 195 deg, the t stat is wide open) then open the bleeder screw on top the t stat housing a few turns till a steady stream of coolant comes out the hole, shut the screw, top off the rad. cap it.

done.

5 th one goes in from the engine back. not the tranny side. known as the backwards bolt. or f you bolt lol
I got that one on, the one that goes on the back of the engine
And have three on top, have the one that 2 ground wires are nutted to and the next 2

Will follow these steps

the dexcool is not compatible with the green stuff... it causes a chemical reaction and the dexcool turns to sludge. it's important to get it all out.

Ok, just to make sure I understand you correctly when you say the upper hose
Is that the one that goes from the top of the radiator to the t stat or the one that goes from the top(side) of the engine to the bottom of the radiator:th_scratchhead:

I love how most people say green like all green is old green coolant. You guys do know that most Anycolor coolants are green, right?

Dunno why anyone with a car that can take the Anycolor would bother buying anything else when doing a service.

My crapbox.. ohhhh I would need to order coolant for it.

You put the ***** bolt back in? I've never gone through the trouble to reinstall that bolt, luckily neither did the people who replaced the engine in my bonne before I got to it, was so happy to see it was already gone, lol.
