• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

Car is almost back together but need a lil help please

So my 97 GTP is almost back together and I have a couple questions (for now) What is this and this??? :th_scratchhead: The metal bracket I have no clue, for all I can tell it may not even be from the car but if it is, I'd at least like to know what it is and if it's important. The plug is coming out of the TPS and I don't know where it plugs into. Go ahead and laugh but please be at least a little nice. Thanks!

Ok the plug I can't figure out is the yellowish one, sorry and thanks.

The plug is to the sensor in your intake tube and the bar went somewhere near the alternator IIRC, but it probably isn't necessary.

the plug looks like the ait sensor, the one that is in the intake tube, just before the tb

cant help with the bar there.

Thanks a ton! I think I about have her licked. Totally embarassed about how long it's taken me to do the LIM/SC/TB gaskets with plugs and wires but if the nice person who needed my phone more than I did would have had the courtesy to at least remove my sd card prior to stealing it so I could have kept my pictures of the tear down the whole thing may have gone smoother and quicker. Thanks again to everyone from this thread and any other threads I may have asked for help in.

If it's your first time..there's nothing to be embarrassed about. I took 10 hours on my first lim job. I did hoses and all sorts of little stupid things at the same time and ....when I was done. It worked and worked right.

Thanks Bill. I guess you're right. It feels good to have done it myself more than I thought it would too. Despite the setbacks (or maybe cause of them) I will have a ton more confidence in working on the car from now on too. Of course I am writing this before being 100% done with the car and am assuming it will work right when it is all 100%. If not, the site will be the 1st to know.

My car started but it runs like CRAP. At least it started though I guess. Now to figure out why it runs like poo. I guess I could have fouled the plugs so I will get some more and change them again if need be, but does anybody have anything other than a vacuum diagram that they could post or link to with real pictures of the vacuum routing on a 97 gtp? I am usually pretty decent at reading diagrams/schematics but I am 2nd guessing if I have the system hooked up right with how bad the car ran. Thanks!

Bill

you could possibly have a vacuum leak. you should have a vacuum diagram under your hood that tells you the routing.

I am pretty sure something is off with the vacuum now. I was gone all weekend but prior to leaving I started the car again to see if maybe the repair fairy had fixed what ever it was that was ailing the car and NOPE no fairy magic there. The car ran for about 2-3 seconds then the idle jumped up to 3000 and I shut it off before I could try and see anything cause it was about 130am and my garage door was wide open so I did not want to wake anybody. Any thing jump out at anybody as to what would cause that kind of idle speed?

Huge vacuum leak. I have a 97 I can tell you how to route every thing. Keep in mind as long as the lines all have sources from the M90 or LIM it should still pull vacuum and be fine.

Before looking into that please eliminate this:
Did you use RTV on the LIM sides with the gaskets?

If you could take some carb cleaner or similar and spray where the LIM meets the M90 as well as where the LIM meets the block. If it changes pitches or attempts to suck in the fluid you have found your leak.

Thanks. Yes I did use the RTV on the side gaskets. I did it exactly like the LIM video I even think I was saying "dab dab dab" like he did in the video. I am glad nobody was watching me talk to myself. I think I may have hooked up the vacuum wrong to be honest since there was so much time in between when I took it apart and put it back together and a lot of the lines and fittings broke. That is why I was asking about pictures rather than a diagram. If I saw a correct setup I'd know if I ran something wrong. I will try the carb cleaner thing a little later today, brake cleaner okay to use instead?

Yep that will be fine.

I have quite a few pictures in my build thread. Click the link in my sig.

Really if you just removed the top end/TB there are only a few Vac lines.

3 nippled tree on top the blower:
Brake booster
Boost Bypass Valve
From under the washerfluid resivoir(there's a t under there)

TB:to the evap purge switch
LIM: the side by coolant elbow goes to the Map sensor

Little tree with 2 nipples coming up from the front side of blower:
One goes to the FPR
I want to say the other one goes to the BBV as well

That's all from memory so, but I believe it to be mostly accurate.

Well F*** a duck! No vacuum leak that can be found. A "real" mechanic we know from church came over and dis a few things and said the IAC should be changed and he got one and sold to me ay cost and i slapped it in, still 3000 rpm idle speed. I'm taking him the TB this morning to have him look at because he said that should be the only otger thing that could cause that. I'm keeping my fingers crossed but thought i'd post here in case anybody had other ideas. Thanks.

Sorry for all the typos. Using my phone.

Okay so.... Throttle body is fine but the guy sent his flatbed up and they picked up my car yesterday to have the entire car there at his shop to be able to use all his diagnostic equipment. Just talked to him and he told me that the CAM sensor is not sending a signal to the injectors and that is something that would cause the idle to go up that high. He is replacing Cam sensor and will keep me posted but he thinks that will handle it. I think the people on this site are very smart when it comes to these cars and am wanting opinions on if this is even possible/probable or is he fishing? I trust the guy but he is a mechanic not a enthusiast and there is so many odd things about these cars I have read here that I am not sure he knows what he is saying or like I said might be on a fishing trip. I hate to throw parts at a problem and not have them fix the problem.

He said that sometimes when things are kinda messed up together in a loop that the loop still operates but when you fix/change something that may cause other things in the loop to not function right any longer. That is confusing when it is said but it sounds so much clearer when it is verbalized rather than typed but I hope people understand what I meant. Does that make any sense to any of you guys? Thanks!

Bill

did you take off the bar that connects from the strut tower to the front of the car.. if so.. check and see if you crimped the gas pedal cable under it... i did that before when i installed my pcm and c.a.i... just other ideas
