Cam install questions

Hey everyone. I've been searching around for answers on this stuff but I'm not really finding a straight answer. I've got an 05 gtp, and I'm planning an xp cam install. Here's the list of everything I'm doing:

3 in zzp downpipe
3.3 pulley
Cam with modded retainers
Zzp pushrods
Rear sway bar
Trailing arms
Ss power log
Plugs and wires

What springs should I go with? Should I concerned about blowing anything? And would this be too much on stock heads? And can anyone think of anything else I should do?

Headers instead of the Plog/downpipe combo. If your going to do pushrods you might as well do lifters. That cam is fine with stock heads. I would go with 105 for springs. Remember to change the lim gasket (unless it's already aluminum), change the vc gasket and timing gasket I would also change the timing chain/dampener while your at it to either a stock replacement or upgrade it if you choose. For susp lowering it and also you can update the front and rear sway bar to either the GMPP or Comp G.

And more importantly you better have something to scan with before you chip a piston and also have someone who knows what they're doing to tune it

I agree with the above but don't waste your time and money on pushrods and lifters, put that money into headers or elsewhere.

Pushrods are a waste unless for some reason you need them like if you had head work done or such Lifters can be replaced at a later time as well.

If you do LS7 lifters you will need shorter pushrods, but otherwise leave stock pushrods. Also 90# springs are an option with XP cam.

105# springs, new timing chain and new chain damper.
New valve seals too.
I would also go with headers over the plog/DP combo.

Shouldn't be worried about any issues as long as you remove the cam carefully, reinstall the new cam carefully, and get the timing correct. Remember to change the oil after the first 50-100 miles.

sorry guys, forgot to say that. I'm doing the zzp push rods because I'm going ls7 lifters, double roller timing chain, and zzp cam install kit.

Honestly, I didn't even pay attention, just checked if they were straight, cleaned good, installed them back on the LS7 lifters as if they were stocker. Lifters are just a wee bit noisier than the stock ones, (Even though my stock ones were sticky, which is why I went LS7, I didn't go with em for performance or anything anyways.)

I'd say that if the engine's gone through two real oil changes since the cam install, that it's doing pretty good so far.

The GM dealerships must be changing to custom length pushrods if they ever replace the lifters in 3800s lolz :th_winking:

Ls7 lifters are not the same as L67 lifters otherwise they would be called the same thing. For stock cam applications LS7 lifters will work with stock pushrods. But it seems the XP cam has a smaller base circle and it (sometimes it appears) throws the lifter preload out.

Okay, so what I'm getting so far is 3.4 pulley not 3.3, why is the pushrod situation so controversial? And 105# springs. zzp claims 140# or 125#s. Why not use those?

It's not that it's a big deal. Just make surf if your going to use LS7 lifters you take the time to measure lifter preload so you are sure to get the correct length pushrods.
