85 Turbo Trans Am

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Mocking everything up see how it looks and what type brackets need made. The a/c compressor is under the mounting bracket now where the alternator mounted so I know it will clear with out a shadow of doubt, I am going to make the lines custom fit for the a/c also I wanted to shorten them up from how they used to be look at page one and see pics when the motor was in the car I also have a after market 3" cowl hood more room for a taller carb

Re: 85 trans am!!!

i took the clutch fan off my 03 gmc. you can feel the the little bit of HP it frees up. the whole set up cost about a 100 bucks for two fans and relays and a on off switch. i had a thermostat to turn then on and off but it burnt out in like 2 weeks. so it got wired to a switch only then. truck ran a line cooler too.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Maaan, them valve covers were stock on like everything, arg. Maybe cooler than the chromies though, agreed. I vote clutch fan but you might need both since its a Pontiac with a small grille and engine compartment. Those things are both giant on my elder GP, but I run one of each kind of fan. Because you never know when traffic will clog.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Theres no grill at all on the trans am solid bumper sucks ass I might try both that's a good idea also going to do oil cooler on it theres room all day long into the front to do what I need to do.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

oh dont ya love the 80's? NOT!

middle one is a temp sensor for sure. it would bolt into the block. or maybe the intake manifold.

the other two have vac ports so maybe pvc parts.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

The one on the left has a spot for a plug too. The one on the right seems to be like a heat controlled valve or flow something I'm lost on all them well two of them now thank you Scotty

Re: 85 trans am!!!

one of the reasons im glad i never owned a single 80's car or truck. to much BS going on under the hood.

i did have a 80 power wagon, but that thing was still a old school 318.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Looks to be a thermostatic vacuum switch on the left, and a thermostatic coolant valve on the right although it could be PCV. Sniff it. Vac one can be for defeating vacuum advance during warmup, plus the big nip would be for the heat riser valve actuator possibly. Coolant valve (guessing) could be to keep the heater core from recieving pressure spikes during warmup. The 80s were all about how to make things run decent in the first five minutes of operation. Us that are willing to let some heat get in the intake before we go into gear don't need half of the smoggo garbage. I've gotten by all my life with few if any chokes that work by simply living in the South.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

U know I have seen chrome edelbrock v/c I have seen Chevy orange Chevrolet v/c. Ive never seen black Chevrolet v/c though and that's what I'm going to do

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Can you do without the crap? Probably... might want to know what you're doing first though. Investigate the existing setup then decide what you can do without. All it needs is one wire and one hose to run, the rest is up to you. I've seen wicked black crinkle finish signature black VCs, had them on my EC. Guys over 40 might think stock valve covers with 50s writing look out of place on an 80s car. Personally I think anything with an aluminum intake deserves better, and that if black spray paint is used on them thats just cheesy. At least use car paint so they're shiny like body panels. In any event, don't invest any effort spiffing up anything until you have confirmed valvetrain component clearance.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

*Facepalm* From Right to Left...

Ported thermostatic switch to EVAP (laughable)

Temp sensor (with Gauge, as mandated by all 49 state T/As)

And finally, ported vacuum switch to carb E4MC/ME (with pictured broken ports)

You need to ditch the BS if you're staying carb'd, and grab an HEI distributor and start from there. MSD makes a great kit for the HEIs, and Edelbrock (Carter AFB Rebadged) carbs are easily tuneable by a novice, although a Quadrajet (Pre E4X) properly built will easily outperform the Ebrock in both WOT and economy. Somebody will surely scream Holley, but facts are, they are WOT only. Even the 4150 Series Econ carbs suck on the street, and offer lackluster performance. If you want a bad ass Q-Jet, check out Brad Urbans Carb Shop Q-Jets.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

I love my EPS carb and it was indeed a snap to tune. Last long too. BTW the step-up springs for that work in a Q-Jet, too. If you don't want to mes with the APT adjustment.

+1 on the HEI. Don't get the cheapest ones, the electronics may be of poor quality. Watch out for Chinese coils. I bought a new Summit for my Ponch and coil was never 100% from day one. It said made in China on top. Pickup coil seems to work fine, and I swapped in a quality module plus good cap n rotor. No problems many years after that work, but the cheapo dizzys come with cheapo guts, buyer beware.

Get some chrome pipe plugs for the sensor holes, but use a real mechanical temp gauge in place of the idiot light sender.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Thank you ws6!!!! I wanted to do away with the crap and just go basic on it all I've got a free 14" electric fan I'm planning get another and put them side by side doing away with clutch fan just got a oil cooler, also got a 2"H x 2"W x 4"L power steering cooler came from a Dakota. Father in law has a motor with a driver side mounted alternator sitting in the shop I'm going try get the brackets, alternator, and power steering pump or ask him what the motor came out of. I have been going back forth between edelbrock and Q-jet I'm just trying figure out weather I need 600cfm or 650cfm some one suggested getting a used 600 rebuild with slightly larger secondarys and wont starve motor at wot.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Oh I have a msd hei btw too was also free love father in law has so much left over just sitting on shelf he just gives away to me
