85 Turbo Trans Am

Re: 85 trans am!!!

I can get a ford 9" for about $400 from a friend. Good? Bad?

depends on if it's set up for your 3rd gen. 9" rears are very sought after for f bodies.

Hell, I'm everywhere, you know this. :) By the way, are you making it to the GTG March 28? New Location, Helenback in Niceville, and apparently it is now going to be "Gulf Coast Muscle" so pretty much anything is welcome. I'll be pimping the red truck this year, everybody has seen Lusickipher and I can't tow the Camper with the T/A anyway. :)

I'm planning on it. If the bird makes it depends on how fast I can get it together. It most likely won't make it. But I can "borrow" the sons GP :D

I don't think it is but I was going to have my grandfather help me fab brackets and all the correct mounting plates out of either 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 steel he has a welder for that thick of steel

^ Exactly what he said. Plus, a 9" is several things- Bulky, heavy, and not particularly strong in stock form, and require length specific axles and a modified housing to fit properly. By the time you do all the fab work you could have bought a Moser ( Notice I didn't say Strange, as they use oem Axle tubes and are generally spendier than the Mosers). Also consider what upgrades you want in the gear and Diff assembly. They are available with between 26 to 35 Spline, and gear choice needs to be Motive over Richmond, IMO. The weak/cheap link on Mosers is the garbage wheel studs they sell, ARP all the way.
That being said, Built 7.5"s can get stuff done, and I could show you videos to substantiate such has not some overzealous mod deleted them. If you find yourself getting to the limits of a 7.5, a Ferd 8.8 is a good alternative for a lot of do it yourselfers.

SM, ride out in whatever you choose. Look forward to seeing you. :)

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Lets do a pole and pros cons to a 10 bolt, 12 bolt, ford 9"? What's every ones opinion?

If you can have Grandpa weld up whatever is necessary to mount it properly, the next two things to consider are width and brake mounting. Narrowing will drive up the cost of anything thats too wide. With what I have read lately about budget rearend swaps, and the portions of your thread that I have read, and not being a drivetrain expert myself... if I were you, I would add the Ford fox body 8.8" to this poll due to availability.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

Agreed. And to get more specific, there are many variants of 10 bolts... 7.5, 7.625, 8.250, and 8.5". None of these are particularly feasible when you consider the cost of aftermarket axles, which will be needed depending on what you go to. Same falls true for random 9" fords.

Re: 85 trans am!!!

So the 8.8 is in mustangs. Okay so would they be stronger then a gm 10 bolt? And lighter then a 9"?

I can handle some custom fabbing what's the best rear to handle the abuse?
383 stroker 500hp 480tq
700R4 HD
I want 3.73 geared rear end
I would also like to take to strip and put slicks on every know and the

In future its getting a 69mm turbo

First off, 7.5 as I told you before. Mel's car makes 620 at the tires on one. 8.8 is a good choice as well, but again, not sure you will need such with an auto. My car made 1538 to the ground on a 7.5 before it gave up. And lets be real, every time I drove it it was beat on.

Vid of her car, hurry before someone gets butthurt and "cleans up" the thread. Hers is the Black WS6 on TT2s.

The car looked good man.
If I can find two rear ends the style I'm looking for I'm going to get two one to beat relentlessly and the other ill build up over time to be grenade proof the plan is to just take the other drain it lots brake cleaner wipeout reseal and fill

Sounds like a good plan. Also check out Inland Empire if you want a strong shaft without spending huge money.
