• The site migration is complete! Hopefully everything transferred properly from the multiple decades old software we were using before. If you notice any issues please let me know, thanks! Also, I'm still working on things like chatbox, etc so hopefully those will be working in the next week or two.

4THGEN'S Failstar

Not a big deal. I ended up just unhooking everything. I'll flop the harness ontop when we drop it...which should happen today. I allowed 4 days for this swap so I'm not in a huge rush. I'd rather take my time and make sure I dont damage anything
Just don't take too much time, important deliveries :D :D :D

I'll take all the time I need. Getting this car back together right is 482849397493 times more important than some seats

My Father has a 2004 Deville with 130k miles on the clock, no headgasket jobs ever. Car is reliable for him, The N* was truely that terrible?

A guy i work with has a 99 sts with 160K miles and he really doesn't like the car at all it's always getting something worked on.

Some say it is. I dont see it that bad. BTW Drunkie the 04+ have a coarser thread pitch which eliminates the gasket issue. His will probably never fail. My replacement motor will eventually fail. But I plan on having original motor rebuilt with head studs before that happens.

Also. I COMPLETELY fail to see how dropping the subframe is easier than just yanking it out the top. Sure it may be tight but I seriously cannot see it being more difficult than having to drop the subframe.

Anyone that hasn't heard of prevenative maint will hate a northstar just the same as the 3.4 dohc in my 96 gtp and ohhh yeah I've owned a vehicle with a northstar in it too it was my 1st car a white 94 eldorado. I don't think either would be bad as long as people keep up and don't let things get out of hand. Leave a thing here don't care about some thing there pretty soon its a pile of rubble!

IIRC heads are throw away if they have problems and the block is difficult to rebuild thin walls a hone jobs is as far as id go........

Could you drop an 04+ motor in your STS then?

Out the top? That's a not so little engine in a not so big bay lol out the bottom for sure if u have the ability trans and engine room to seperate the 2 is next to none unless the whole belt acc drive comes off the other side.

Its grey area. I'm sure you could make it work but number 1 I don't know enough about these cars yet to know wether or not. 01-02 are supposedly by themselves. Number 2. I leave for school in 5 days and I didn't have the time to wait around and figure it out. I need the car running ASAP

We did do through the bottom. It wasn't hard. Just time consuming. Tedious is a good word. LOTS of stupid little things. TONS of coolant hoses. TONS of little brackets to hold a line in place or whatever. Tons of wiring. And 30 zillion grounds. They went overboard with grounds. Seriously. There's 3 grounds on one little harness. I dun get it. Make 1 big one and eliminate a mess.

Also...I've never seen a more restrictive crossover. It's got 2 close to 90* bends and it's not mandrel so it ends up being like 1 1/2" diamater after its said and done.

But the motor is in. All the cradle bolts are tight. Motor/trans mounts are tight. Done for the night. Prob take me 6-8 hours to get it back together. I don't see it taking terribly long since I actually know what I'm doing this time.

Brandon. I don't see any reason I can't get those seats down there. I'll hopefully have the car done by 5ish tomorrow night iincluding coolant, fresh oil, bleed the brakes. Little things. Better swing me some dolla bills fo gasolina

I once had a n* car. 96 olds aurora. I like the car and never really had a problem with it other than radiator and water pump. Got good gas mileage for being as big as it was. Although it had the 4.0 and you have a 4.6 the guy i work with said his sts only gets about 20-22 mpg.

Took it for the first real drive tonight. Did a couple WOT pulls. Slow. But the V8 roar is enough to make me smile. Has a small miss under light throttle. Probably needs plugs with the motor sitting.
