Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

Got the car back. Trans shifts good. Nice and firm. Has hardened 4th, shift kit, and 4340 IS. Andrew only charged my $927 for everything. Not a bad price.

But heres the deal, something is always wrong isnt it?

Well the car needs new front brakes, and front passenger wheel bearing. On top of that, it still has a misfire, plus Andrew said my car is getting a stupid amount of KR for reasons unknown. He said he wants the car back asap.

So the car is going back to him Monday morning as he is going to replace my front brakes, wheel bearing, install VC and VC gasket, tune the car, investigate why shes getting so much KR and tune some more. There goes another $400, sweet.

BUT i did get a free car wash :)

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

$900 isn't bad for a trans rebuild. $400 for brakes, wheel bearing, and a vc isn't to good though. Hope you get your misfire figured out.

That's also a tune. Andrew does top notch work. He stands by his work and has worked on the fastest Wbody's in Michigan.

As harper said, thats with a tune in my car. Andrew has no idea why my car is seeing 7* + KR at the moment so he said i need to bring it to him with a full tank of shell or BP gas and hes going to tune it to reduce the KR and have my car running top notch.

I trust the guy. He knows what hes doing.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

It really is. $927 for a rebuilt trans with a few hard parts is a great price

$400 for a tune, that will be tuned by one of the best here in Michigan + the other stuff hes doing.

I cant complain, but all in all, its still a lot of money.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

I say you're getting a good deal, you'll get the kinks worked out buddy it just takes time :)

Why Shell or BP? If you don't know the answer, I'm curious.

And I am another one of those pro-180* tstat users. My car heats up just the same, I get the same amount of heat, and on hot days in traffic the car can still see 195* so honestly it's running where it's supposed to. But moving I run 181-185* give or take. So yeah. Keep that in mind, and make sure your tune matches your change in tstat (if at all). ;)

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

Why BP or Shell or also Mobil was because Andrew said those are the three best gases out there. If Andrew uses any other kind of gas on his Turbo GP, he sees a lot more KR.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

I mean my great grandfather who used to drive semi hauling fuel, he swears by Shell! Maybe there's something to it. I mean I know they advertise their additives and blah blah but extra additives are no reason for it to have such a great reputation and be recommended for high performance. I'm still curious...

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

I couldnt tell you for sure, i would also like to know why Shell is the best? out there. Hmmmm this gets me pondering.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

I THINK there has been a thread about it on here before, not sure. But iirc it was inconclusive. It was kinda like the oil debate or something comparable. It's all a matter of opinion really.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

Yeah Andrew is the man, he will get you sorted out for sure. He does work dirt cheap for people he knows. Examples from me:
Headers + Cam + Injectors + Valve Springs Install = $200
Rewired my entire dash from far left side to stereo area= $50
Installed My Transmission= $200

Generally he charges based on how much of a PITA things are and what kind of mood hes in lol. Also if you need parts from ZZP he gets like up to a 50% discount sometimes. I passed on most the black friday deals just because I knew andrew could get the prices anyway lol. Only thing that sucks is his schedule. Trying to get on it can be tricky sometimes!

Also I've literally never put anything but shell or BP in my grand prixs either. The quality is much higher, and keeps your injectors/fuel filters living a lot longer and healthier.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

Thank god im friends with him.

Your exactly right, he just charges people based on if he knows you and how hard it is.

He welded on my exhaust tips, guess what i had to pay? Nothing, i owed him 24 wings from bdubs, all he wanted was food. LMAO

Not only is he dirt cheap, he does the best work in the area by far. He said $400 is low for everything he is going to be doing to my car next week (mainly the tuning is the big one) but he goes, "since i know you, ill make $400 work for everything, not a problem." cause thats all the money i have left.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Bye-Bye Broken Trans

Well my car does run like absolute sh*t.

Even at low RPMs that car studders constantly as im accelerating. Not sure whats causing this but i cant even accelerate fast at all with this. Could KR really be this high at such low speeds? My 97 is fcked up. But i do love the feeling of the trans, the firm shifting is oh so nice.

Heres a quick video of the studdering, watch the RPM gauge.

I was leaning toward a chipped piston to after everything else you've already checked/replaced. I would pull the heads myself but I know Dan probably isn't up till that just yet.
