Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

It's a tough decision.

Personally I think 18s would be a tiny bit too small, while 20s are too big. Leaves me with 19s obviously. I just wish I had a comparison picture of 18s vs 19s to see if the extra $200 is worth the extra inch.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

I'd do the 18's. They'll look just right for the car and you'll save a few bucks. And you gotta think about tires later down the road. Just because the Achilles aren't that big of a jump doesn't mean others aren't ether.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

18s ,once the gap is closed more with the SSCs you will be gold.
200 saved for diapers!!

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

hey man just wana say you have one sexy gtp. I want mine to start to look close to your's someday. I'm also a young (almost 20) guy studying engineering, keep up the good work.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

20s are too big and heavy, 19s have limited tire choices. 18s are perfect if you don't get big brakes

I appreciate the compliment man! I'm 21, studying to be an Automotive Engineer, with a new born daughter (almost). The only way I can afford this car, is because I work two jobs. One is 3rd shift, the other is a weekend job. Im busy 24/7 with school and work, but then I look out the window, see my car, and it makes it all worth it. Lol if there's a will, there's way.

20's are no beuno. Too big for my taste, I think 19s would be perfect BUT the tire choice is horrendous. I decided to go with 18s with 245/45/18 tire. I figured with the money I saved if I would have went with 19s, I will buy new KYB GR2 front struts and mounts, and install them with the lowering springs same time I put the rims on the car. Rears already have new monroe struts on them, I'll just put the SSC springs on those in the back.

Here's the downfall I'm facing. I've been doing some research, the Mustang Saleen rims only come in +30 or +24 offset. No way in hell will I ever go with +24. Mad poke. +30's are even iffy with me. I want the rim/tire to be right flush with the fender. No Mexi-poke because thats ugly.

The +30 offset is really cutting it for me. May stick out too far, not sure though. Insight on this?

*As a side note, I won't ever be getting "big" brakes. The biggest brakes i'll do are the F-Body's. Which will come after the rims/tires/struts/lowering. F-Body's will easily fit behind some 18 inch rims.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Fbody's fit behind stock 16" rims lol. 18s will clear Gxps or even ctsV brakes. Infact.. I can't think of any brakes that someone has put on a GP that won't fit in some 18's lol

Thats what I've heard also. After an 18" rim, you can run any brake setup you want.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Well maybe not if you are going to try and run something custom/crazy off a lambo or Mcclaren lol

Man i can imagine that being a busy schedule. I can barely think of doing one job with engineering coursework. but 2? thats crazy man. Good for you

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

I feel your pain. I have 2 kids and one due in May. I work 40+ hours a week and go to school in the evenings for mechanical engineering.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

It's not easy, but being a car guy I am, I just can't keep my hands off or resist buying parts so I work two jobs to do so. Lol

BUT back on topic about the rims. Since no one is answering with an opinion. I think we all know I will be purchasing 18x9 Saleen rims. The highest offset offered for Saleen rims are +30 now. +36 has been discontinued for years. I want rims/tires flush with fender. That's my goal. But +30 offset is really pushing it for me. I don't want Mexi-poke. Insight on these saleen rims with +30.

If everyone says they will poke out too much, then I need to find a new set of 5-spoke rims.

If my math is correct (may not be...I'm super tired) then they should be damn near flush...less than 1.5 mm poking out past the wheel well.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

18x9 30mm offset should be fine. Might have a slight poke but should look good nonetheless

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

1.5mm outside the wheel well is almost not noticeable.

I just don't want it poking out TO far because we all know that's ugly. Real ugly.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

It's a possibility when you lower it. Some guys have rubbing issues.. Some are able to get away with it. Just one of those things you prepare for if you end up having too.
