Re: 1997 Black GTP, Low(er) Is Finally In The Future.

Now this is how you keep an old rust-prone car to stay cleaned in harsh Michigan winters. So ugly to look at, and embarrassing to drive. But you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the car clean. It all makes up for it once nice weather rolls back around.

-Front Bra
-Steelies and different tires
-Remove front air dam
-OEM Mudflaps
-Wax
-And on my next paycheck I'm going to purchase some Por-15 to undercoat the bottom side.

Now these rims and tires are up for sale if anyone wants them. I'm selling over the winter to help fund my Saleen rims.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Damn....I was just scratchin my nuts today hoping I have the gusto to swap the winters on. I have to put another coat of the TW black endura on them.
I don't have a bra, maybe I should start wearing one.....it does look kind of manly.

How well do the flaps work to prevent the side panels from being massacred by salt

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

the bra can damage the clear coat on the paint if it isn't tightened or on properly. When i got my GP it had a bra and it had really scuffed the paint. I hope you have a better experience with it! that GP looks bad ass in your sig

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Yeah, if it moves at all in the wind, that constant back and forth will scuff the surface pretty bad. Just wax first, and put it on securely.
Por 15 on the underside, rockers, and especially rear strut towers will be the best defense against winter.
I need to rust proof the underbody before winter comes. Rockers are unsalvageable, so screw them. And rear strut towers are coated in a thick layer of grease before the new struts went in, so they're good.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

FYI, it's better to undercoat a car in the spring rather then the fall.

No idea how well the flaps work. Just bought them on eBay for $30. This is my first winter with them, but they can't hurt.

And I wouldn't even bother with the bra, if it's not extremely tight and 100% perfect fit, it'll trap moisture and you will be worse off with it on.

Thanks man. I really like my GP, it's pretty good looking. lol

I bought the bra off craigslist for $10 only. It was missing some pieces but I improvised. I drilled a hole in the bra and screwed into the side with the fender screws that were originally on the car.

Ill honestly probably take it off. It's not 100% snug from the missing pieces and it's keeping moisture in. Which is probably not a good thing. lol

I did wax the car before hand, it won't blow in the wind. The only thing I'm concerned about, is it's already trapping moisture on the front bumper. Plastic can't rust, but I feel like it will hurt my paint.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

I think that would be okay. The hood rusting is what I'd be concerned with. The area where the sheet metal wraps around the front and welded, I'd do something there because that's the spot where rust would start. Coat it in something maybe

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

What i've seen people do here in ND is mask off the shape of a bra on the hood and effectivly make a Plasti dip bra. It actually works really well and looks better than a bra in my opinion. just have to peel it off in the spring =)

this. i've also seen alot of guys do it if their going on a long ass roadtrip, beats taping the front end up.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Not a bad idea ^ if the edges are clean why not

It actually works very well. here's a video of what it might look like.

its not hard to get clean lines, just be careful not to peel up the plasti dip while removing your masking tape

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Ended up running over a screw somewhere on my street. Discount Tire said it wasn't repairable. I was pretty upset as I had to pay $76 for a new unmatching tire.

Drove around like this for day, ew.

As good news, I sold my old Pirelli P4 tires and Comp-G rims. The rims were starting to peel really badly, mainly the reason why I wanted new rims now. Sold them for $400. I think I made out good on that deal. Currently have $625 saved up for some Saleen rims. only $75 away from making the purchase on 4 brand new ones from American Muscle.

Been browsing tires, I'm kinda leaning towards Achilles ATR Sport. 245/45/18. UTQG: 400 (around there, if I remember correctly), Traction: AA, Temp: A, Speed rating: W. They get mixed reviews, some love them, some hate them. They have a warranty of 40,000 miles I believe. Can have all 4 for $375ish shipped.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

I have saved up enough money to purchase some 18x9 +30 Mustang Saleen rims. $699 shipped for all 4.

- I'll also be buying Achilles ATR Sport tire (245/45-18). Decent price, decent reviews. So love them, some hate them. Can be had for $350 for the 4.

But now I'm reconsidering. I originally wanted the Saleen rims in 19's. (19x8.5 +30) But the price difference is kinda ridiculous for an extra inch ($150 extra) . After doing some math, I can have the 18's and tires for roughly $1,050 BUT can have the 19's and Achilles 245/35-19 tires for about $1,250.

The 19 inch tire is only $50 extra than the 18" tire. Since I have all winter to save up, I'm debating whether to just keep saving for the 19's or stick with the 18's.

Need some advice, GPF Friends.

Re: 1997 Black GTP, Back To An Ugly Snowplow.

Well if it's only a difference of $200 personally I just save up. After all it is winter so it's not like you'll be throwing on the new rims anytime soon. Then again factor in tire replacement cost down the road and not so stellar roads.
