SAD DAY for my Grand Prix

I will do it in the morning and let you all know.. I'm just worried about the sound I heard before it siezed. When yours did this, was there any pop or clunk sound before it locked up or did it just stop?
 


OK.. I pulled all plugs, motor spins freely with no strange sounds other than spinning.. All plugs were water logged and cyl 1 spit out water. I think one of the back ones did to, but can't tell for sure. The puddle of water under the car was decent size and all blended together. :D So far I have compression tested cyl's. 1-3-5. Results are..

1 ~100psi ~85psi ~95psi
2 ~155psi ~150psi ~155psi
3 ~160psi ~165psi ~160psi

So far I'm thinking there is a problem with cly 1.... Although there was still water showing on the compression tester tip, I'm going to dry to dry it out a little more and let it pump out as much water as it can while I test the back three.
 
I have a spare motor in the garage for that, eventually...

BUT.... LOL I just pressure tested the back three... Strange!! What is normal compression on the L36's?

Retested 1 again and it's still sitting on 100psi...
 


Ok I have a couple of ounces of transmission fluid in my #1 cyl letting it sit for about 20 minutes. About to go put the plug in and rotate it a couple times by hand, see if I can build the compression back up in that cylinder.
 
Ok, after soaking cylinder 1 in transmission fluid for about a hour and cycling it several times, spitting out the spare fluid, cylinder pressure is back up to 170.

So next steps are: Remove plastic UIM and gasket, go buy new one, while UIM is off, continue to dry out ports and cylinders, change plugs, change oil, try again and how all is well..

Sound about right?
 
Alright, I feel a bit better now. Just pulled the UIM off my car and to my "surprise" LOL Now for the drying..

Bill, if you don't mind, I saw the link for the LIM mod by tapping the coolant ports and plugging them but you mentioned JB Weld. Do you have or know of a link explaining how to do that or would you mind elaborating here? :D Also, will this hurt circulation at all? I don't want to tap the LIM because I'd want to take it off the car to make sure no metal pieces got into the coolant passages, I like the JB Weld idea. Is it as simple as mixing it up, slapping it in the holes good, letting it dry, and reinstalling?

when you get the new uim, advance should have it in stock. have them price match rock auto for it...its a nice discount on it. and youll be replacing the egr pipe sticking up between those coolant ports. the new pipe you put in will be smaller in diameter so it doesnt get close to the plastic.. use a pair of vice grips to pull the old pipe out, and use a 3/4? inch socket (DEEP WELL) to tap the new pipe into the lim.
 


OH yumm. It's not pretty when these blow that's for sure!! I was going to get info about the JB Weld fix, plug the holes and not worry about it again. I say this because when I swapped the LIM gaskets earlier this week, I replaced my UIM with one off my old motor that threw a rod that was only a year old if that. I used it thinking it wouldn't be cracked, but was I wrong!! I'd like to just plug the holes and bolt it back on..

LOL I'll look into it more and decide.. Not to say one's idea is better then the other or anything, but this intake I put on the car is three years old. It was only on the car for a year if that before I threw a rod, it sat on a shelf in my garage for the other two years. It doesn't even have a carbon film on the inside of it yet. Looked at pretty and clean on the inside as it did on the outside. THAT makes me worry, I get a new one and a year later pop again? Maybe I got a bad one off the bat, but if I can avoid it all together I'd rather plug it and be done.
 


yeah some stores are full of assholes. our store will though cuz were nice and actuallly think about it as that were getting the sale regardless...unless its an insane discount off our price. then we kinda have to say no :/

Also, how long has the car/engine been sitting? That can also play a factor. I had an engine that was compression tested to be good, then it sat for about 3 months. I then did another compression test, and one cylinder was low. Carbon build up could have decided to sit/dry/cake and then flake into the wrong place.

Although, with having 1 cylinder be half the amount of the best cylinder, I'd just pray that all the work you put in is worth the effort. You did already do the LIM, so that's behind you, now just to do the UIM. I tapped my LIM when I pulled mine off, plugged it, and then opened up the bypass on the LIM near/under the TB. I've read that JBWeld has failed on some, so I'd be weary about doing that. You don't want it to fall out and then clog a water passage.

Heck, just pull the LIM, and then tap it. If you are really serious about doing it, and would rather someone else do it, send it to me (TX), and I'll do it for $20 plus shipping back and forth. It's really simple once you have the tools/experience.
 
Ok I went ahead and plugged the LIM.. I have gotten to where I can change out a LIM in about 2.5 hours so is this works I'll port my other intake and swap out later if needs be, but until then I want to see if it will start. I'm about to go to the parts store and get spark plugs for the car and see what happens..
