No, thought if these holes are plugged you don't need to replace it? I'm hoping no more coolant in the UIM period..
 
well technically, if the holes are plugged then yes coolant shouldnt get up in the uim. but the uim is still cracked/ has a hole and when you put it back on, theres a chance you could blow it out entirely. resulting in a couple pieces of plastic laying in your lim instead of coolant
 
Ok, got a new one when I got the plugs.. Everything is buttoned up other than my air intake.. It took a bit to get it started, but everything sounds fine just smoking A LOT!!!

3800 is a tough engine to kill, even water has trouble with it.











...unless you happen to get stuck in a crazy Florida rainstorm frenzy right after a seafoam treatment.
 
nope, nothing at all.. running better then it was :D

I have heard they are great engines, just stupid little design issues... Not onto my front windshield tinted and HID's, after a wash and polish... Poor car looks filthy..

That's what I realized after doing all the gaskets and such... I decided to do a seafoam treatment. To my surprise, nothing came out. Makes sense, the water will steam clean the inside for you. I would never use water voluntarilly, but what's done is done.

Just call it a feature of these engines: Self steam cleaning feature.
 
LOL!! Well after a week, car is still running strong. I changed plugs again after it quit smoking for a couple days and I changed the oil. Runs like brand new. It is throwing a code now, absolute intake pressure or something.. I bought a new sensor that sits on top of the pvc valve (when I took it out it come apart into two pieces so...) put it on and all is good. I had a gurgle sound under my dash for a couple days, figured it was air in the system so I burped it again. Sound's gone..

Sorry I didn't follow after a time. I was busy running around and your thread title didn't catch my eye.
You shouldn't have needed a new UIM after plugging. However it surely isn't going to hurt.

I once did a UIM at Advance's parking lot. Walked in and saw a Regal NA hood up. Saw the guy walking out with two gallons of water, that's when I knew. I diagnosed it from the sidewalk. He was driving along, went to pass someone and it began misfiring. Seeing the parts store he pulled in and shut it off. All he could find was low coolant and it wouldn't start, but it would turn over. Had him pull the intake tube and it was full of water. One hour later he was driving out of the lot.. lol
 
PS.. When you hydrolock it's because the water isn't pushing past the rings. I understand blow by etc. Yet the water typically doesn't contaminate the oil. Let's say it did though... Anyone that has ever taken a steel oil pan off a 3800 knows there's 3/8 of an inch of space below the plug that will not drain.

Water is heavier than oil... this is why I always fire up the car for a moment and then drain oil. I like to get it stirred up if there is any change of water being in the oil..
 
bill i had kinda the same situation at work, twice lol ( i work at advance) anyways the first time, guy comes in with an se 3.8, said he had the engine replaced for 2k...i asked him why and he told me the shop said it was a head gasket/head problem cuz coolant was in the oil..i told him he could have paid around 150 and had it fixed and running fine..i told him what the problem was and he **** himself..second time, guy comes in and wants to just change the lim gaskets, i tell him that he may want to buy another uim cuz its most likely cracked inside or somewhere...he said no just the lim gaskets, (he was giving me a real ****ty attitude about it) so i said ok and sold him just the gaskets, but as he was walking out i said that id see him in about a half an hour, i knew the guy lived close by...he smirked...well wouldnt you know he came back with the original uim and it had a major crack around the egr tunnel and to top it off, there was a hole on the top..lol

That's just amazing! To know what the problem is, give a helping hand right there and then, and get him up and running within an hour! Amazing! I am quite capable of doing many things on a car (ex: rebuild tranny, cam install, clutch job, exhaust work, turbo kit install, Supercharger kit install, Computer tuning, street or dyno), but to be able to do that job in one hr... that's amazing! I think I took two full days to do mine... Granted, I like to take my time and do it reeeaaalllly sloooww the first time, but still, I just can't fathom 1hr. That's skill.


To give myself a little credit... I can install Cams on a K-Series Honda Motor in under 4hrs, while others can take up to a month to get right... Not to mention I was the first to hit 230whp NA, with a factory original Honda K-Series block, power all came from bolt-ons and tuning. Yes, NA 2.0 vs. the NA 3.8 we have in our GPGTs. You can't beat the 3.8 for fuel economy and power in a full size car though. Nothing can... especially not Honda. That's what I love about my '99 GPGT
