12 year old's opinions of the drinking age

so i'm on facebook and see people joining a group calling for the drinking age to be lowered to 18, and i'm thinking, "hmmm, lets see." so i click on it and see all these 12-16 year olds saying "you can vote, you can join the military, why can't you have a beer?"

answer: you won't stop at 1.

I used to think it should be dropped back to 18. until i got to college. almost nobody under 21 that i know has the ability to drink responsibly. it's extremely common to stand over a passed out friend on the weekend and debate weather or not to take him to the hospital to get his stomach pumped. even tonight. i looked out my window at 8:45 on a tuesday and a guy was getting taken out of my dorm on a stretcher with what looked like an alcohol poisoning. and get real, almost nobody who abides by the logic above votes, let alone enlists in the armed forces. and if you're worthy of drinking under the age of 21, it means you know how to be responsible with and, and therefore are much less likely to get caught or get drunk enough to put your life in danger.

i'm absolutely sick of this town. it's just a bunch of raging alcoholics. i'm sick of hearing stories starting with "we were sooooooooooooooooooo drunk..." and ending with "i passed out at like 4am, it was awesome!" every night. i'm transferring. i don't wanna hear about it anymore. and for every underage kid that thinks it should be lowered to 18, get some life experience. fear for your friends' lives a few times because they're irresponsible and then tell me that it's a good thing.

i totally agree. I'm 18, never had a drink and damn proud of it. I'm in a spot where everyone, literally EVERYONE, right down to 8th graders drink. almost all of my friends drink. i choose not to, it's not attractive to me in a girl, so i choose to keep it out of my life. and here's the way i see it. people who are older teenagers now seem to deem themselves worthy of being able to drink illegally. what happens if we let them drink legally? then the drinking will just begin at a younger age. science has proven that drinking at a younger age causes permanent brain damage.

Now here's my disclaimer: because i said I personally choose not to drink does not mean that i dislike people who do. i said it above, MOST OF MY FRIENDS DRINK. I don't think any less of them, nor do i think any less of you all (yeah you BIO!) who drink regularly to. Just not my thing.

ive been drinking since i was 16! right about the time i got my license. makes sense right? BUT i have never, and will never drink and drive (excpet that one time but i was 10 houses down so that doesnt count) :th_jester:

I was hung over the day i got my dl at the age of 16 that being said I was experamenting and so on dint really start drinking till 18 when i started roofing but I never drink and drive and rarely ever drink till i black out

I think the age should be 18 cause in my mind every one can be responsible but i know this to be a pipe dream and 21 is just fine

when i got to college it was like the coolest thing ever. but then i got tired of embarrassing myself and losing my entire saturday. and blowing money at the bars. and gaining weight. and tripping over stuff, hurting myself, and tearing clothes. i got stopped by undercover cops on the way home from a party once, for some reason i didn't get arrested. i haven't been drunk since probably january. it got really old hearing the same stories over and over again

I'm 19 gonna be 20 this year me and all my friends drink but if one of us is gonna drive you better believe were not gonna let him or her drink. We know alot of people over the age of 21 that drink till they pass out and what many people may call "unresponsible drinkers" so you can't say its just people under 21 that over do it.

i think the drinking age should stay at 21. i just turned 21 and ive been drunk twice. once when i was 17 and again at 18. didnt even drink when i turned 21. ive been the DD several times for friends. i went to a college to be a diesel mechanic so it didnt really have the college party atmosphere but there were plenty of people there that drank most every night. most of them didnt do very good in school and have a DUI on there record already along with underage drinking.

i knew how to drink when i was 18. i knew how to drink before i was 18. i was in the bar drinking with 25 year olds downtown when i was 18.

its the people, not the booze. all we have to do for fun in WI is drink, so that's what we do. yes, literally every entertaining time i have involves alcohol in some fashion. get used to it because the rest of your life revolves around it unless you have friends that are into playing sports. even those guys will drink when they arent needing their body. blacking out for me is a hobby since it leads to an interesting story of what the crap happened during that black out session.

college is a joke. 90% of college students are still idiots, they just have the money to be there. once you get out of college and into the real world everything slows down and its not so retarded anymore. just wait, youll see. i dont drink as often as i used to, but i sure as hell drink more.

That is the way it is here. There really isn't much to do so why not grab a beer and have some fun.

I am 19 and think it would be stupid to change the drinking age to 18. SD was one of the last states to change from 18 to 21. When I was younger, I thought it was dumb that it was 21. Now that I am in college and see how irresponsible some people are, I think 21 is fine.

the only reason to change it to 18 would be to allow people to be dumber sooner so they learn faster. that way by the time you get to college you at least had a summer of binge drinking under your belt before you decide to be a rockstar in college.

I'm 32 years old, I started drinking at 16 and smoking at 19. I never liked drinking that much I just tried it a few times, I've been drunk several times in my life and I honestly don't like the sensation and I don't miss it I actually avoid it like a dissease. Now I rarely have a drink, only once every 3 or 4 months and I don't like the taste of alcohol. I just have one or two beers and then order a coke instead which is another addiction I'm trying to get rid of too D=

I smoked for 9 years and I quit it over 2 years ago and it was one of the hardest things I ever did, but I'm glad I did it. The down side is you really never stop feeling like smoking, sometimes I still have the need for a smoke but It's very easy to control now.

In short, any type of addiction will cost you lots of $$$, health, friends and maybe your life, you really never get rid of them and they don't give you anything in return except feeling stupid.

Here is my take on it:

At 18 MOST kids drink.. Its not hard to get beer/alcohol. If they make it legal for 18 year olds to buy stuff then they are going to drink even more. People are not dumb, if you really think most 18 year olds don't drink you need to get out in the real world. I am 18 and if my parents really believe that I don't drink they are dumb.

Now here is my problem with these kids saying if I can join the Military why can't I drink. Before you even bring up the Military, get your ass down to a recruiter and ask them about it. Just because you can does not mean you will. Lets say if someone were to join the Military (ME) guess what you get... A military ID, it's a government picture ID with NO BIRTHDAY!!! Find me someone who will turn down a Military ID when you are buying beer. Rarely will you find a dick that will want to see a different ID.

I smashed my car real good and came out of it with no injuries, thanks to God, when i was nineteen, since then I don't drink much. Hell last weekend I had few beer for the first time in months. I never liked the idea of being drunk and ****faced so I don't drink myself to oblivion, when I drink I drink until I feel the buzz then I quit. On occasion when I am not relied on to drive (hardly ever, wife does no drive, her friend does not drive) and I have no worries about the next day I may get ****faced but very rare. Like ZR1.. that is what I choose, it does seem kids these days find it fun and humorous, or the thing to do and get ****tered real bad. I tend to think it is a fase and they move on like most of us, I did say most as we all know some don't move on. I don't think lowering the drinking age will change that, just like selling boose from government liqour stores (hard stuff) and cold beer and wine stores (here in BC Canada) will make sure underage people won't drink cuz it is regulated makes sense. kids drink no matter what even if the government sells it or not. There needs to be an age to start things, it is set to 21 I say leave it there, there are more important things to worry about

its the people, not the booze.

x2 amen.

some can handle it, others cant. regardless the drinking age, theres alway going to be underage consumtion. its the binge drinking that i dont understand. i did it yeah, when i was 18.maybe i grew out of it. although i have noticed more of age drinkers passed out in bars than i did when i used to goto parties lol.

respect the booze

For me i guess im a little more gaurded around booze so i dont drink as much my dad was a functional boozer he ran a multi milion dollar company alcohal never interfeared but he was rarely ever with out a drink at home

and every other afternoon my mom will call needing a ride home from the bar She works 7-7am so its not that bad being hammered by noon

I guess i just dont wanna be that guy
But i drink plenty and can handle it Alot cant

I'm 18, I drink, but I dont' drink to get drunk. I'll sit with a few of my buddys and have a beer, and wait atleast an hour to drive home. I don't ever plan on getting sh!t faced even when I'm 21, 31 41, any age just because I hate the feeling of not being in control.

Drinking is the biggest waste of money on earth. Notice its always the kids who are bragging about being sh!tfaced are the same people that go around saying they have no money.

I wonder why. :th_laugh-lol2:

I have nothing I should say in here...:hide:

When did facebook become myspace?

about the time my parents let my 13 year old brother make a facebook account in addition to myspace. it's like a friend of his is a friend of an older person who is a friend of mine... i got rid of myspace to get rid of a bunch of little kids.

that statement's full of absolute fail, feel free to pick it apart.

i agree with what most of you guys have said, i don't see a problem with having a few with some friends every now and then. it's the other 99 out of 100 people in this school that show up to meetings on sunday still drunk, not showered, and look like they lost a fight to a pack of sharpies with all the marks on their hands. idk, i'm done with being a complete idiot because i drank too much. it's embarrassing

im almost 28 and i dont drink and really dont care too, i have drank b4, but i got a very bad anger problem and i choose not too. and i kno atleast im not gona end up in jail for doing sumthing stupid.

but i dont think anyone under 21 should drink..

does anyone ever watch that show campus pd? look how stupid them kids look and act cus there drinkin, thinkin there kool pissin there selves and getin beat up and indangering lives throwing up all over them selves mite be a made up show or w.e but ive been to campus partys and thats what its really like =NOT KOOL
