Look good it's amazing what a little bit of elbow grease can do and you've kept your cost down vs paying someone else to paint it for you.

A lot of hours went into this, by removing all the old paint, spending the money on real spray gun and getting it all completed. Definitely saved myself well over $150+ I'd say to have someone else do it. It may not be perfect by any means, but I'm someone that likes do the work myself, just to say I did it.

i know what you went through. my rear bumper was real rough, enough bumper filler and sanding tho and its 100% better then it was.

I'm glad to see somebody swing a real gun across something! Dan it looks like she's shiny and the right color, and thats half the battle. Also glad you were pleased with the results, thats more than a lot of people can say about their first real paint experiment. Reading back, there may be a couple things I'd personally have done differently but as I said its just good to see fresh paint. Congrats

I'm no professional painter, and don't have a lot of knowledge when it comes to painting "correctly." I just set up my gun by reading the instructions and testing it, then following the directions on the paint cans. Lol.

Like I said, it's not perfect. But I'm happy with it, considering I'm a "rookie" and this was my first time using a spray gun.

The silver is the direct paint code WA8945 for the middle fascia, I had to specially order that. The black was just Duplicolor GM Black. Since the black on these cars, are pretty basic black. It's probably not a perfect match, but it's so close the naked eye will never see when driving down the road.

The DC universal black is very close on my 99s. That gun looks like the same one I bought a few years ago. The purple comes off with thinner, on it. You would crap a moon rock if you got your hands on a top-notch gun now! But that one has the controls set up like the big dogs and does train the hand right. The price is so low because the machine work on the fluid tip / needle is awful. Did not like the cup threads either, and I found a push-in lid that happened to fit. I could go on and on...

I think its fairly clever using your rattle can basecoat, thats totally do-able but nobody thinks to. Just don't heat the paint much too much in any one spot while buffing. Your prep sanding scratches were a little too slick, you could have stopped at 600 and I'd have felt better about long-term adhesion. But if it stuck, it stuck. In situations of doubt like that, I like to test with duct tape near an edge. Press some on real good then yank it and hope no paint comes off. lol

For my first time ever using a spray gun, and I don't do much painting myself, I didn't have the need to invest in a "quality" spray gun. It got the job done just fine for what I needed.

The rattle can works great, but I wouldn't use it on anything with a much bigger surface area than this Air Dam.

The only reason I sanded to 1000 grit, was because the Duplicolor Primer directions said to do so. Lol. That's the only reason I sanded that smooth. I guess we'll see how it holds up over the summer. That's the true test.

I'm just nervous about wet sanding and buffing. I'm not a fan of sanding some fresh paint lol

wet sand with 2000 grit paper and warm soapy water. yes it will dull it but you'll also see the orange peel go away. once the buffer hits it the shine comes back.

if you did 3 to 5 coats of clear you'd have sand the hell out of it to cut through the clear coat. you can feel it get smoother too while sanding it. it dont take a whole lot.

No shame with that gun for this purpose, its perfect. And if 1,000 grit is what the destructions call for, thats whate she gets. You done good. At least it was 1000 wet. If you're nervous about buffing, thats just the right mindset if you ask me. One of my favorite relevant sayings: The danger is not in standing on a cliff, it is in being careless there.

I did either 4 or 5 coats of clear. And they were very heavy too. I really want this Front Air Dam protected as I'm sick of it peeling and having to repaint it. This is the 4th time since I owned it. Twice done by someone else, now this is the second time by myself doing it.

I've wet sanded many things before and it always comes out great. It just rubbing sand paper over some nice paint then seeing it dull makes my nerves cringe lol

I think if I got your approval on the paint job of this, I would have to say I've done a decent job then.

The time has finally arrived. Car is back to how it should be :) No more winter mode. I'd have to say, with the new look, I just re-fell in love with my car again.

On the down side, she really took a beating this winter. :( There's some paint chipping almost on every wheel well and the gas cap rust really took off - in a bad way. This summer, I really need to put my money into some body work rather than more parts, to get it looking pretty again.

I also re-wired and replaced my Windshield Washer Fluid Pump since it was dead. I also replaced my Wiper Arms from some I picked up from the junk yard as mine were horrible:

You really have a huge boner for Smuts car, don't you? Lol

Like I said, I don't like to think either one of us has the better car. We both show what a 97+ and a 04+ can look like.
