Won't shift into gear

Hey everyone I am new to the site and have a question on my sons 1996 Grand Prix SE 3100. It will not go into gear when you shift it from park. Reverse lights come on, I can start it in neutral, no key issues. It just won't go. Every once in a while I can get it to go into drive if I play with it long enough. Reverse is impossible...

Any thoughts? Thanks

Re: tranny help!!!

Sometimes it will go into drive, once in drive it will drive fine. Easily shifts on road. Just won't go into gear without a LOT of working the shifter.

Re: tranny help!!!

Sounds to me like something came loose. I had a new engine put in about a year ago which means they had to remove my trans, when they put it back in I was having problems with it not shifting when out of drive.

apparently something was loose as the mechanic reached with a tool of some kind from the front of the car down to the trans and popped something back in. Trans has been fine ever since.

I have a 97 gt so I am pretty sure its the same trans.

Re: tranny help!!!

Sounds like the safety switch that prevents it from going into gear without applying the brake

Would I be able to move the shifter if the NSS is bad? I can hear it click on the column. I removed the lower shroud on the column and the cable in the switch moves, don't know enough to know when they're good or bad. I also went to the yard and got two other positioning sensors and tried those but it didn't change anything.

Thanks for the help!
