watch your mouth!! first off its not me its the end user i know what im doing lol speaking of back to work for me lol
So before I start my rant let me give you some background. I am a Geek Squad ARA (Advanced Repair Agent) with 2+ years exp and if you think windows 8 is "crap" then you have no idea how to properly use it. Windows 8 is faster, less resource intensive, runs smoother, more secure. Sure it had it quarks when it came out but 8.1 fixed that and now its great. Search is amazing, the charms are useful when ever you need them and they are gone when you don't. It hunts 95% of drivers down for you and you need to do nothing. /end rant
Now as for the DVD drive two things could have happened. The first and most likely is the DVD drive died, go to where you bought it and see if they can test it. The second and verry possible is the Upper and Lower filter drivers decided they didn't want to be installed anymore. Two easy ways to fix this:
1 - DIY) http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems click run now, follow directions, and profit
2 - Pay) Go to best-buy have the GS look at it and pay them. Don't be an ass and they will be nice.
*I am NOT nor is Geek Squad liable if you follow my instructions and you break something. Do it at your own risk, but realize if you manage to mess up something your dumb.
Good Luck!
I bet the update goofed and corrupted windows,

We got us a badass over here. Watch out!
BIOS? What does the BIOS have to with a corrupt update? Try safe mode and go from there, if it still doesn't boot your going to need a pre-environment to get into something usable to fix it. Updates break windows all the time. And ok if your a site dev then great, make your sites work for all browsers and not just IE... Thats so annoying.
