Whipple set up?

I've read a lot of posts about this kind of thing, so i know your going to say go turbo, but i don't like turbo's yes there cheaper to go fast but i don't like the way they make power, so don't even say it.

I've seen that the w body store used to sell a kit for the Whipple 140ax, I would think that the 100ax charger would be a better match to the 3800, does anyone know how that would affect the amount of KR and peak hp. My goal for the car is 500HP, I'm sure the bottom end would have to be built, and i know i would have to build an adapter plate but that's not a problem. PS this is for my Pontiac Fiero

Read lots of posts? Do more ..... Reason = "Im pretty sure the bottom end would have to be done"
500hp ! On a SC I'd like to see how many have! (Ask Snowflake how much his OMGTVS supercharged car is making.........ohh about 130ish hp short of your goal)
Want 500hp ?

Yep go turbo lulz

Ok I'll re-word this better, I don't trust stock rods and pistons with 500hp of harsh SC power.

And Jonbob's car is amazing 536whp and rising that's around 600hp at the crank. not even maxing out the sc

I just have to find out which supercharger is better for the 3800 the 100ax or the 140ax

He's talking chp... which the Regal made about ~450 with stock heads, no intercooler and only ~11psi.
Whipple's are nice... but TVS's are 98% as good for a lot less money.

If I did it again, I'd go 1900 with a custom intercooler as the adapter plate. That'd get a stock heads cammed car to over 500chp.

The setup would be mostly custom... intercooling properly and setting up the bypass valve properly will require some knowledge and fab skills. The "kits" out there are jokes, so if you do find one dont assume it is anything more than a pile of worthless parts and a blower.

Find a bare blower somewhere, and roll up the sleeves on getting it onto your car properly. Also plan on running some seriously good octane on it (e85/110leaded), or prepare to put some massive heads and an amazing intercooler on.

I found these maps from Lysholm which is almost identical to the Whipple

Now if anyone knows how to read them? lol

After looking at that chart, I'd definitely go with a TVS build for the money.
Ported heads, mid sized cam, intercooler as adapter plate and a 1900 will get you to 500+chp.

Plan on spending about $1,000 for the intercooler parts, $1500-2000 on the blower, $5-600 on the cam stuff you're going to need, then budget in ~$500 more for random gaskets, fluids and other BS.

Oh yeah, tune, wideband and all that good stuff will be more as well.

^^^ what he said. the whipple blower is going to flow more... a lot more. you have to build the engine to handle that flow or there's no reason to put that big of a blower on the car. and what he said about the custom fab work... aside from the blower you're making all of your own parts

2300 for the blower last i checked with magnuson.

Price might change based on the length of snout you order and how many pulleys you order.

Agreed with TVS 1900 as well.

Be prepared to spend more on the TB adapter and machining a new top plate for the intercooler core you pick up. Unless you have an entirely custom one built for the job.

TVS 1900 has been done by a guy on 3800pro and by an aussie.

3800pro guy saw 15-20+ PSI IIRC with an S3 cam and rockers. He spend $3000+ dollars on the "kit" from harrop which includes the 1900, some sort of TB adapter which he still had to have another adapater machined (might still be less than having the entire front intake being machined as the 1900 will not come with an intake.) three pulleys, and a plate that let him bolt it up to his L67 LIM. Still required alt relocation brackets and a smaller alt.

Aussie ran an XP cam and A/A intercooler and made 384 whp? Video on youtube somewhere. Guy had plans to rip that off and throw a whipple on there instead.

This is an opinion, regardless if a mod says it.
If the guy wants to stay supercharged (as MANY people do) then it's his choice.

As soon as you enter the 1900 the price becomes outrageous really.

The 1320 is the only blower worth swapping and only if you can find a used one for a fair price.

OP: have you considered the level of transmission you'll have to have built to hold this kind of power?

I'm planning on staying supercharged as well. A whipple isn't a good choice when there are others out there that'd be better candidates for the price point, especially when a few of them are liquid cooled and its going to take the same amount of fab work to do the deed.

It'd be the W140AX, for reference OP.

I talked to Paul at PRJ about it a few years back.

Guess around five grand for a stout whipple setup.

Then, like Matt said...you'd need a pretty retarded transmission to hold 500 "chp" regardless.

I think theres a guy on here with a GMR chain he'd like to unload.

Also, didn't jon bob have custom axles fabricated using porsche 930 CV joints? I can just imagine the cost :D
