Whining Noise When Turning

about say 6 months ago my car started to make a whining noise when i had been driving rough around turns and such. i took it to my buddys shop and he thought it was the heat shield so he welded it back on two or three times and it seemed to help for a while then would come loose again and we would repeat the process. well today i took it back to him and he doesnt think that its the heat shield but rather the power stearing pump and he put some fluid in the pump and it seemed to quiet it a little bit for now. he says itd be about $260 to replace it do you guys have any ideas on what the whining noise could be? and any suggestions on what replacement pump to buy if it is infact that. he told me that replacing it could possibly not even fix it and a lot of pumps make noise

thanks for the help guys

Heat shield? Get a new mechanic.

Your power steering pump is definitely doing the whining, it's pretty normal for these cars. Just leave it until your steering gets really stiff, then replace it.

well he thought it was the heat shield because i must have said a rattling not a whining noise... im not real sure. but i would really like to get it replaced because it annoys the piss out of me driving around sounding like a little wind-up toy

take your drive belt off and spin the tensioner and idler pulleys. see if there is and wobble or play in them. if they feel loose or make noise, or do not spin freely, that could be your problem

lol, mine whines too, but all the time, not just during turning

You must have an aftermarket pump on yours already... LOL

I replaced EVERYTHING!!!! New (parts store) pump, new pressure and return lines, reman rack (3 of them, YES THREE!!!) and my car still whines!!!! I gave up.. Remaned parts are crap....

youre not giving me much hope here... all i want to do is get rid of the whining! i hate having my car sound like crap. needs to sound like a mans car! lol

vid would help.

if the fluid is real low, yes it will whine all the time. but if its just low enough iirc its when you take a left turn the trans gets starved of fluid. once again, iirc, the filter is on the d/s of the tranny, make a left, the fluid gets pushed away from the filter to the pass side of the pan. then you get a whine.

My steering boogle....

Pressure line blew after replacement of Motor 1 causing fire.
Replaced pressure line and return line that melted.
Replaced pump also since the front seal was leaking, but not whining yet...

(at this point I have new pump and both lines new)

Reman pump SERIOUSLY whined... So I figured well maybe the rack sucked in air and ruined my rack since the pump was "new". Replaced rack.

New pump, new pressure line, new return line, new rack... Still whine.

Took car in for alignment, blew rack seal 5 miles down the road. Here comes rack #2.

I did good myself with the alignment and it pulled straight with no issues so I figured I'd drive it until I bought new tires (needed them soon anyway)

Got new tires, had alignment done, blew rack seal next day. (I blamed it on the alignment since our cars have no sleves and the alignment shop turned the rods sticking out of the rack to do the alignemnt messing up the seals) They understood, whatever....

Rack #3 installed and alignment done... No leaks, still whines... So I said WTH, I have lifetime on the pump, I'll get a new one and try. Maybe I got a bad one from the start. Pump #2 installed, still whined after 4 months... Not bad but when turning it does a little. I said F it, I'll live with it.. LOL

Don't mean to scare you with my story, I just may have that great luck after 3 racks, 2 pumps and a pair of lines... BUT hey, I can change out the complete steering system in about 30 minutes now.. :D

did you bleed the system correctly? leave cap off, turn wheel stop to stop, keeping reservoir full, until no bubbles are present?

looks like you have a 1999... maybe the 04+s have better luck... just wishful thinking because that whine litterally drives me insane

i got a duralast p/s pump about 2 years ago now, not a peep out of it since it went in. i also had to change the rack, (got a used one) as the pump didn't fix my power steering issue.
