Wheelhouse fix idea...horrible problem to have...

Ok...ive been looking around, because my drivers side wheelhouse in the trunk is rusting, bad, the shock is starting to somewhat bent it upward into the trunk, as most of you know happens.....I thought of an idea...might be a bit crazy here...but...basically all that really rusts is the metal around the shock mount plate, correct? I was thinking, what if...I cut out the piece the shock actually bolts to, clean up all the rust, to stop it, as in grind it all out/cut it out, then..the top wouldnt exactly have to be shaped as it was front he factory, correct? So I could basically weld in a 1/4" or so piece of steel, make a recess in that piece of steel, or hole, that would house the part the shock actually bolts to, and wala...done, and strong, and undercoat the living hell out of it to make sure it wont rust out again...just brainstorming here....not sure if taking the roundedness of the top part out will effect anything...ANY and all input is appreciated...trying to figure out a solution here...have access to just about anything I would need tools/skills wise...Thanks in advance for any help.

How long would you say? I knew thats what it was....and I could do the whole wheelhouse through GM...but dont see a point in that considering itll do the same thing later on down the road...

Would you say my idea sounds good, or, any reason why it wouldn't so much work? Thought about it quite a bit and dont see how it wouldnt..

I would just cut out what part you need to, push the strut plate back down a bit and cut your custom piece of metal and weld it up in there.

This is my plan when I do mine later on, they arent bad yet, but I'll get em before they do.
