Wheel Lugs

Got what sounds like a dumb question here...been working on my 06 GP lately and recently went to take off a wheel only to find the one of the lug nuts was stripped. Nice of the kid with the impact gun to say nothing about it... Anyway, I bought the removal socket and spun the thing off with a breaker bar. I was looking at what they had for lug nuts at AutoZone when a guy who worked there said "don't buy those, they are junk. We have better ones behind the counter"
I'm thinking a lug nut is a lug nut pretty much, but I want something that's gonna look decent and not strip out the next time the punk at the shop thinks he's at Daytona. I have stock wheels on the car now.
Anyone have any recommendations?
 


A lug nut shouldn't strip out with an air gun unless it's the meanest gun out there. They typically strip or have issues when someone cross threads them. Is the stud messed up too?

If yes, you need to replace the stud.

All lug nuts are not made the same. Many have a tin outer coating that likes to be problematic. I either recommend stock lug nuts (can always get a few at the junkyard) or McGard. The McGards I have been using for about 6-8 years now and their lifetime warranty is likely never going to be used by me. They are amazing.
 
I'm guessing the guy had the wrong size socket on the impact gun...he stripped it pretty good. The stud is good. I've had problems with the ones with the tin outer cover too. Thanks for the info, I'll check out the McGards.
 
When you say stripped, to me this means that the threads on it are messed up. From what you said, it sounds like the outer part of the lug is rounded.
 
Yes, the outer part of the lug was rounded. I had to get a socket with reverse threads on the inside and work it onto the lug nut. Once it grabs you just thread it on backwards until it has enough of a bite to turn the lug.
I'm just driving it with 4 on that wheel now, but when I bought the car there were a few oddball lug nuts on the other tires too. So I'd like to get some new ones anyway.
