What does it take to trap 105-110MPH?

Hi Guys,

First post on the forums (will get some pics together soon). Recently, purchased a 97 GTP for next to nothing and am very pleased with the performance thus far. Ultimately as I start to replace parts/modify the vehicle, my goal is to eventually trap about 105-110MPH in the quarter. What is the best upgrade path to get there? Will the trans take a dump long before those trap speeds? I have read a fair amount on upgrades but would like to hear some opinions.

Appreciate the help.

that's well into the 12s territory. youre gonna be hard pressed to do that on a budget for less than $5k.

I dont want to sink in $5K that is for sure, this car is for winter duty but I want something that moves and figured the SC setup could get me there cost effectively (noob thinking) - I am thinking the following mods:

Short Ram Intake
Headers
Tune
Pulley upgrade
Backyard SC porting
Plugs
Wires
T stat 180

That will obviously land me way off the 105-110MPH, but how far off you guys thinking? I am expecting the car to trap about 93MPH stock...

That ought to turn close to 100mph, and I think you're only rockers away from the low side of your goal there. A 3.25" on you're setup outlined with rockers and a good tune should get you about there, definitely within 1-2mph. Add an intercooler and you're easily there, and well under the $5k budget number that was tossed out - 105mph trap doesn't absolutely equal 12's and huge money - 105mph trap speed, from my FWD experience, would usually be like a low 13 second ET, but everything is on the launch, a good hooking RWD car can run 12's on 105mph, a poor hooking car might only run mid/high 13's. You're right on the money chasing trap speed vs. ET, because its a much more consistent number.

Now running 110mph definitely would be 12's, and much more money, 5mph from 105 up to 110 is a pretty significant increase in power there, something like 285whp to run 105ish - which is doable with the above mod list you have, and at least rockers. Easily doable with intercooling. As stated, a lot hangs on the tune. To push 110mph you're looking at closer to 325whp, which you're not going to gain without some more extensive modifications.

All as long as the trans holds... that's where to leave room in your budget.

I trapped a few 105-106 mph runs on a stock '03 transmission...mods I had at the time were...XP Cam, Pacesetter Headers, stock tb with fully ported blower (I know...prolly could have gone a little faster with the TB but my LS1 swap was in the works), tune, 3.4", and other small crap like an open cone, 160*, AL103's, MSD coils/wires (not that they helped), poly mounts/solid lowers...its all about the driver mod though.

If I were you...I'd do...

Open Cone, port your blower and TB, ZZP Stage 2 IC or any big IC that might be for sale somewhere on teh cheap, 42.5lb. injectors, headers of your choice, hell...even 1.84 roller rockers...you should be able to get away with a 2.8" or so on there with a good tune and just pump crap 91...and probably a 2.6" at the track with a little race gas. That should be good for mid to low 12's if you can drive it and it hooks...trap PROBABLY around 108+

if you have an I/C then you should be making 280 WHP+ which makes it possible to get into the 12's.

Only if you're a very good driver though.

IIRC it takes 280-330 WHP to get into the 12's depending on the driver, weather, track prep etc.

Agreed, 280whp will run 12's, with a killer, 1.95 or better 60' - probably not going to happen in a GTP unless you've got drag radials or slicks. 330whp will run 12's even on a soft launch because it'll back half a lot quicker.

Maybe I'm off the mark, but won't a 3.25" on a ported blower with rockers/headers/good tune/plugs/stat/intake make aprx 280whp safely w/o an intercooler on pump gas? Maybe closer to 270whp, and then adding an intercooler and more boost would make 300whp?

Meh...I've seen a 1.9 modded rocker/3.3"/SLP Header/Borla catback/Custom tune car only put down 245/357...but it was at a dyno day...not sure on the dyno either...or the tune...so maybe it could have yanked out more power...idk.

those mods and replace the rockers with a cam and you might get those numbers... i dunno with just rockers though

i know an XP cam is 270-280 WHP with just headers and a ported blower.

So rockers should be less.

Maybe 10-20 HP? so 250-260? Maybe not considering 3.4 is 225 WHP IIRC.

Still, these numbers are kinda useless.

I/C + headers + blower port + good tune and driver mod = 12's
