Valve Cover recall

I am about to purchase a 98 GTP 2dr and it oil leaking from the valve covers. I seen this recall information on here and called the dealer today and they said there was no such recall ever put on these cars???? Why would it be ALL over the internet if it never was. Suggestions??

I just bought my 2000 GTP the dealer had done the recall over a year ago for the previous owner - it was leaking again. They only do the front anyway, that's the easy one, I'm sure the back is leaking too. What ever you do get it fixed right away. I was at the junkyard the other day and out of 7 GP's four of them had melted clumps for engines!!

^Agreed. Do it yourself or have it done. It's not that hard. Replace both, mine were both leaking, even after the dealer did mine on the recall. I believe it is the seals around the perimeter where the bolts go in to be the problem area the "gaskets" are really more of an O-ring seal. I am now leak free! Go Felpro.

^^agreed change them gaskets asap, make sure fuel injector o'rings arent seeping either if they are replace them too

that dealer is BS'ing you, i just went and made an appointment yesterday to get it changed on Wednesday. just go to another dealer

Find a different dealer.

Are you kidding me? I did the damn things for nothing???

Had I known there was a recall I sure as hell would have had the dealer do it. That pisses me off. :th_angry-cussing:

I used to like this car but I'm really hating it now.

First of all, the vast majority of the recalled cars only get a little clip or something to move the spark plug wires which is a job that takes under 5 minutes. Some are included to get the whole gasket, though - front only.

Second, are you saying you're hating your car because you didn't know this was a recall campaign?

the cars that have just the spark plug wire clip relocation is on the n/a 3.8, the supercharged replaces the front valve cover gasket

Sorry haven't replied yet been busy working on other things with the car. I found the actual recall information and I'm gonna take it to the pontiac dealer tomorrow. With hard evidence you think they could still deny it? How hard is it to actually do it yourself? Thanks for the help guys

That's just the straw that broke my back. Actually hating it because every gasket in it has went bad. I hate to crawl under the thing. The entire bottom is a mess. It's just poor engineering. Then GM wonders why nobody was buying their cars.

I also have a toyota 4runner about the same age and mileage. There is not one drop of oil under that thing. You could eat off the oil pan.

Hmm.. Funny since my front valve cover is leaking oil too... Do I just call a dealer and tell them that there is a recall on my car, when can I bring it in? Or something else?

Good news peeps!!! I called another dealer today explained to the service tech what was going on and he immediately said let me call you back in ten minutes. He called back and said I got you scheduled for this monday at 9 am. Not all dealers are crap.

yea had the same prob with my local dealer. I told them that Pontiac says to replace the valve cover gasket and they told me that they just had to put spark plug retainers on there..... im screwed bc theres not another dealership for another 50 miles :(

They're not wrong, yours isnt Supercharged.

GT's get the retainer clip
GTP's get a new front valve cover gasket.

If yours is a GTP then yes, print out the recall and take it there.

Here it is just copy and paste into a word document and take it with you.
