Test drove a 2003 Pontiac Grand prix without overdrive tonight and at 60mph the car was running 3000 rpm. I even sped up to 65 and wasit doing like 3300rpmI and it would still not up shift?? Am I losing my mind here cuz I don't think that's right! It has 74000 miles.

The 03 should have the hardened 4th gear but some i don't think do. It's a common problem on them.

Uhh yea, I'd say something isn't quite right. I know that the switch to OD is temperature related (or is that TC lockup? ) but I'd definitely say that if it was in "D" and it wouldn't shift something is definitely fubared up.

3rd gear would be about 3k rpms at 60 65ish.

depends on the build date of the car, early 03s i believe didnt have the hardend 4th hub, mid to late should have it for sure. i think

TC lockup is temp sensitive. Crusing at 55 when the car is cold it stays at about 1900 RPMS....once it gets to 165 it drops to like 1600ish so that must be the temp lock up activates.

My 03 had soft 4th shaft but didn't fail. I replaced it with the rebuild at 165k. Does it have any codes?

If I know one thing about buying a car it is this:

If you have a bad feeling about it don't buy it. It's not like there is a shortage of cars around. lol Keep looking.

I don't know what y'all are talking about temp related. My 2002 GTP shifted into OD or 4th in any temp. I think you need to find the solinod that shifts third to fourth and have it tested.

I've seen a couple of 2003's that were produced late 2002 with non hardened 4th gear hub shafts.
Likely the shaft is stripped and that's why there's no 4th.

Poncherelli... I think they are talking transmission fluid temperature. There IIRC is a temp at which the trans defaults to 3rd gear in an effort to have you drive slower and get it's heat back down.

I was mistaken on the switch to 4th gear being temp related. It actually controls TC lockup which according to 4thGen occurs at 165* (engine temp). As far as the switch between 3rd and 4th though I don't believe there to be any temp sensor that says one gear or the other (unless we are talking about what Bill mentioned in his post).

My 2000 GT lost 4th too... Bought it with high miles but they were all highway(4th) so go figure. Just talk them down 3k cause the trans needs rebuilt then have TEP build/install you one with the money you saved and you'll have the piece of mind of a bulletproof tranny
