Transmission plug

I just got my transmission back in and besides my rack falling out and some of the bell housing bolts not lining up, it went somewhat smooth. Now I have the round plug on the drivers side not going in because the pins on the trans are all f'd up. This is on a 98 GTP. How necessary is this plug/ what is it actually for?

I believe that plug is for everything trans related. Overdrive and shifting and all that jazz. So in other words, you need it.

This oughta be fun.... Also does anything hold the shaft into the boot on the firewall or does the subframe just hold it up?

For the rack and pinion? I've looked for somewhere a bolt would be and found nothing.

at the end of the shaft is a hole where a bolt goes once its on the rack, its a 11 mm iirc. and you need a good 12 inch of extentions to get to.

Does anyone have a pic? It just fell out so I assumed it didn't have one.

Back out the torx or hex screw and get it back on the column. DO NOT TURN the steering wheel more than a 1/4 turn right now. You'll screw the clockspring if it's turned around and around.

Scott..the part you show is just below where it meets the column. It's oval with flat spots..has one dinky tiny why the eff is it so small set screw that holds it and lets it telescope. I think out of all the drops, I've had two fall. When that happens..it's fun to get back together.

That set screw made me want to find the engineer responsible and request 5 minutes alone with him in a locked room.

Should come with a warning about not attempting this step until you can touch your right elbow with your right index finger and fold your body into a suitcase.

Then again half the jobs on this car should say the same.
