Transmission is slipping in drive

Hello,

I am new to this forum and have a little bit of a problem (or a major problem).

I have a 2003 Grand Prix that I really love but the other day when I went to go somewhere I pushed down on the gas pedal and the rpms went up to approximately 2500 before it would move. There isn't any hesitation in any of the other gears, only in drive.

Is this an indication that I have major transmission problems or do you think it could be minor? The car had 149,000 miles on it and I have never had any previous problems with it.

Any suggestions?
